Handout #195: Leadership – Decision Making

Leadership – Decision Making

Leadership is more easy to recognize than to define.  In a democracy with the “one man, one vote” doctrine, the only thing that makes one man’s vote more important than another’s are his qualities of leadership – his ability to lead and to influence the thoughts and actions of others.

  1. A leader must project a positive image of initiative – enthusiasm – competence – resolution – character – and – integrity.
  2. Mental Toughness, the ability to withstand pressure, to rise above hardship and disappointment, is a real test of a man’s leadership ability.  The late President Kennedy wrote:  “. . . A man does what he must, in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures – and that is the basis of all human morality.”
  3. The leader must be able to communicate his feelings as well as his ideas to those whom he would lead.  He must be able to say the right thing, in the right way at the right time.
  4. The leader must believe in himself.  The leader must be HIMSELF.  A man must know what he can do, and he must be himself.  “It’s the price of leadership to do the thing you believe has to be done at the time it must be done.”
  5. A leader must have courage.  The will to do, the tenacity to overcome all obstacles and finish the course, is rooted in courage.  It is the outward manifestation of our spiritual development.
  6. A leader must love his fellow man.  “We too often love things and use people when we should be using things and loving people.”  One’s love for God is equal to the love one has for the man he loves least.
  7. A leader must have respect and concern for others.  “The length and breadth of our influence upon others depends upon the depth of our concern for others.”  “Forget yourself for others, and others will never forget you.”
  8. A leader must have a burning desire to win.  “Only he who can see the invisible can do the impossible.”  “A Winer makes commitments; a loser makes promises.”

INFLUENCE:  Example is not the main thing in influencing others.  It is the only thing.  “Weather our life on earth is a success or not depends 100% on how we use our influence.”
