Handout #153: Winning Words . . .

  • When you are in any contest, you should work as though there is, to the very last minute, a chance to lose.
  • A lot of nice, fat gobblers would strut less – if they could see into the future.
  • One way to go under is to grow overconfident.
  • Always remember that if you got all you paid for there would not be enough to go around.
  • The trouble with some people who stop to think is that they stay parked.
  • Play hard, play tough, play rough, but play clean.
  • Your must feel your best to play your best – obey Training rules.
  • A winner paces himself; a loser has only two speeds – hysterical and lethargic.
  • What I gave, I have; what I spent, I had; what I left, I lost by not giving.
  • When your work speaks for itself do not interrupt.
  • Be a champion in practice. That is where champions are made.
  • Some can teach you to do, and some can teach you to think, but you alone must decide after doing and thinking.
  • Think fit, Look fit, Be fit.
  • A winner shows he is sorry by making up for it; a loser says, “I’m sorry,” but does the same thing the next time.
  • Keep in step with your best self and you need not worry about the rest of the parade.
  • The measure of a man is the size of his thoughts.
  • A champion must have the desire for perfection, and the will to punish himself in the process.
  • Success is deaf; big talk does not compensate for small accomplishments.
  • Teamwork means success – work together – win together.
  • After all is said and done – more is said than done.
  • Golf is like taxes – you drive hard to make the green and then wind up in the hole.
  • You should not blame the coach for being a crank if the players are not self-starters.
  • Nothing is impossible. We merely do not know yet how to do it.
  • Backbone will not get you anywhere if the knob at the top is made of the same material.
  • If you can keep your head in the midst of all this confusion – you just do not understand the situation.
  • A good disposition is important. All great players have it.
