Handout #287: Think or Worry . . .; How to Live 100 Years Happily

Think or Worry

You can think about your problems or you can worry about them, and there is a vast difference between the two.  Worry is think that has turned toxic.  It is the jarring music that goes round and round and never comes to either climax or conclusion.

Thinking works its way through problems to conclusions and decisions; worry leaves you in a state of tensely animation.  When you worry, you go over the same ground endlessly and come out the same place you started.

Thinking makes progress from one place to another, worry remains static.  The problem of life is to change worry into thinking and anxiety into creative action.  How do you measure up?

***************************************************************

How to Live a 100 Years Happily

  1. Do not be on the lookout for ill health.
  2. Keep useful at work.
  3. Have a hobby.
  4. Learn to be satisfied.
  5. Keep on liking people.
  6. Meet adversity valiantly.
  7. Meet the little problems of life valiantly.
  8. Above all, maintain a good sense of humor; best done by saying pleasant things every time you get a chance.
  9. Live and make the present hour pleasant and cheerful.  Keep your mind out of the past and keep it out of the future.
  10. BE ENTHUSIASTIC.

***************************************************************

Learning to Love

There are many who want me to tell them of secret ways of becoming perfect and I can only tell them that the sole secret is a hearty love of God, and the only way of attaining that love is by loving.

You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying, to work by working; and just so you learn to love God and man by loving.

Begin as a mere apprentice and the very power of love will lead you on to become master of the art.  —  St. Francis De Sales

***************************************************************

Source of Happiness

So much unhappiness, it seems to me, is due to nerves; and bad nerves are the result of having nothing to do, or doing a thing badly, unsuccessfully or incompetently.

Of all the unhappy people in the world, the unhappiest are those who have not found something they want to do.

True happiness comes to him who does his work well, followed by a relaxing and refreshing period of rest.  True happiness comes from the right amount of work for the day.  — Lin Yutang

LEARNING is like rowing a boat.  You either advance or drop behind.

If you would leave footprints in the sands of time, it will be necessary to wear your work shoes.

Handout #277: Courage to Conquer

COURAGE TO CONQUER

Pick a goal in life, Pick something worth going after, worth striving for.  If it’s to be an All American, try to be the very best.

Shoot for the moon, that’s the thing. Go for the very highest. And while you’rs shooting for the moon, and while you’re going for this goal, remember you have to pay the price.

The price might be constant devotion, constant heartache, constant practice, and loyalty to your coaches.

Give everything you have – your body, your mind and your soul; give all you have. You can always depend on HIM.

You will discover that HE will give you the courage – regardless of the problem.

**********************************************************

For Your Personal Motivation

  • Have Patience. All things are difficult before they become easy.
  • An error doesn’t become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.
  • The person who wants to do something finds a way; the other kind finds an excuse.
  • Ideas are funny things; they won’t work unless you do.
  • We will know as much of GOD as we are willing to put into practice, and no more.
  • One cannot always be a hero, but one can be a man.
  • Pick your friends, but not to pieces.

*************************************************************

KEEP YOUR PATIENCE

(FOR IF YOU LOSE IT YOU LOSE YOUR: COMPOSURE – CONFIDENCE – ASSURANCE – WILL – AND – SUCCESS. )

PATIENCE IS VICTORIOUS: Oftentimes it outruns skill and outwits impulsiveness.

PATIENCE IS PRODUCTIVE. In time the mulberry leaf becomes silk.

PATIENCE IS VISIONARY: Visualize the ripened grain as the fruition of a series of successive steps of working and waiting — Securing the land, breaking the soil and planting the seed. Nature is wise enough to wait and persistent enough to eventually have her way: and so can man, if he will add Patience to Diligence.

PATIENCE IS A POSSESSOR:

  • The world belongs to him who bides his time. (Leroy Brownlow).
  • A Good Leader takes a little more than his share of the blame – a little less than his share of credit.
  • “It isn’t the thing we do or say, but all in the way we do or say it. What would the egg amount to, pray, if the hen got up on the perch to lay it?”

Handout #218: What it means to be Young . . .

What it means to be Young . . .

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means the predominance of courage over timidity, of adventure over the love of ease.  This often exists in a man of sixty more than in a boy of twenty.  Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.  We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.  Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair – these bow the heart and turn the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty of sixteen, there is in every human being’s heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and the starlike things, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what-next, and the joy of the game of living.

You are as young as your faith, as old os your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.  — Unknown

******************************************************

  • To be seventy years young is sometimes far more cheerful and hopeful than to be forty years old.
  • So long as enthusiasm lasts, so long is youth still with us.
  • Growing old is no more than a bad habit which a busy man has no time to form.
  • FULFILLMENT – to fulfill the dreams of one’s youth; that is the best that can happen to a man.  No worldly success can take the place of that.
  • I shall grow old, but never lose life’s zest, Because the road’s last turn will be the best.

Handout #138: How to Influence People!; How’s Your Disposition

HOW TO INFLUENCE PEOPLE!

One of the items most prized by collectors of antique autos is the Benz, a pioneer German car, first produced about a century ago, When its manufacturer, Karl Benz, put his car on the market he found that people didn’t take too kindly to the odd contraption. It was noisy; it scared horses; and, what was even more disturbing to the skeptical public, the “crazy scheme” worked!

Bowing to local pressure, the civic officials immediately passed a law to limit the speed of “horseless carriages” – six kilometers an hour inside the city and twelve outside. Benz realized that he would never be able to market the car if autos had to creep along like that, but all of his arguments got him nowhere. Finally, he wrote an important government official and invited him to take a ride in the sinister vehicle. He then arranged with a milkman to park his milk wagon on a certain street and, as soon as the car went by, to whip up his ancient horse and pass it, favoring Benz and his distinguished guest with German equivalent of a Bronx cheer.

The plan worked perfectly. The official was furious, and demanded that Benz overtake his rude competition. But Benz, all apologies, declared he couldn’t do it on account of the ridiculous speed law. Shortly thereafter the law was changed.

Influencing people is the art of letting them have your way.

***********************************

HOW’S YOUR DISPOSITION?

LIKEABLE old fellow we know seems to be getting a bit crotchety as he grows older. The other day somebody asked him what had happened to the cheery disposition he once had, and he answered, “I have always tried to see the good in everybody, but lately my eyes ain’t been what they use to be.”

One way you can tell whether you are getting old before your time is to ask yourself whether you are more critical of other people than you once were; whether your “eyes” that used to spot the good in others – “ain’t what they use to be.”

If you would keep your reactions young, nip in the bud any developing tendency to find fault; find good! This will keep you lithe emotionally and it will keep you being agreeable – the kind of a person people can keep liking. Not only can it keep your popular with your associates, it can keep you popular with yourself.

This is artistry in living. Like any other part, it requires continuous practice – especially as you grow older. If neglected, arthritis of the personality sets in.

Handout #81: If For Boys . . .; When Things Go Wrong

A quick note before this week’s Handout:  I had the fortune of hearing some wonderful presentations this week at a work function.  One of the presenters said something that stuck in my mind, and I have heard these words repeated many times in my head since I first heard them on Wednesday.  What he said was so simple, yet so profoud and often overlooked.  He said:  “You know how a child spells love, T I M E.”  So for all the parents and grandparents out there that have children and grandchildren, remeber that there is no better gift that you can give your child or grandchild than your TIME.  Put all your other priorities aside and spend more TIME with your child or grandchild!!  Now, to this week’s Handout …

IF FOR BOYS …

If you can take the knowledge you have gathered through years of study, work and school and turn it into living acts of kindness through a life that keeps the golden rule …

If you can give a little more than other fellows and keep on trying though you’re tired, yet make not public all your efforts nor hold of account to be admired …

If you can keep on working toward the future holding fast to all your secret goals though time and circumstance may slow you and even strew your path with burning coals…

If you to win a war, must lose a battle then lose it, but let no one see you cry let sympathy be saved for those who need it not for those who have the will to try …

If you can keep your trust in all things holy remembering, too, that high above the power which made man still directs him with infinite patience and with everlasting love…

If you can dream and plan and struggle and keep on when lesser men give in – you will have earned the noble art of manhood and what’s more, my son, you’re bound to win!

****************************************

WHEN THINGS GO WRONG …

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, when the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, when the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile but you have to sigh, when care is pressing you down a bit – rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. And many a fellow turns about when he might have won had he stuck it out.  Don’t give up though the pace seems slow – you may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor’s cup; and he learned too late when the night came down, how close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out – the silver tint of the clouds of doubt, and when you never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems afar; so stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit – it’s when things seem worst, you mustn’t quit.

***************************************

“No Horse gets anywhere till he is harnessed.”

“No Stream ever drives anything until it is confined.”

“No Life ever grows until it is focused, dedicated, and disciplined.”

“He won’t be denied who will find a way.”

PLEDGE TO PHYSICAL FITNESS …

I PLEDGE to mount a frontal attack on the galloping obesity that surrounds me and threatens to encompass me.  Girth control is my goal, and I will mobilize all of my resources to achieve this, the most honorable objective.

I will exercise moderately every day and eat only the amount of food necessary to sustain body weight, to hold the line on that vast waistline, and to qualify for the “No Belly prize.” – Anonymous

I ASKED GOD FOR STRENGTH, THAT I MIGHT ACHIEVE.  I WAS MADE WEAK, THAT I MIGHT HUMBLY LEARN TO OBEY …

I ASKED FOR RICHES, THAT I MIGHT BE HAPPY.  I WAS GIVEN POVERTY, THAT I MIGHT BE WISE …

I ASKED FOR POWER, THAT I MIGHT HAVE THE PRAISE OF MEN.  I WAS GIVEN WEAKNESS, THAT I MIGHT FEEL THE NEED OF GOD …
