Handout #318: Cooperation

Cooperation

  1. It is carrying out one’s team assignments in the spirit of mutual good and without thoughts of “what’s it going to do for me?”
  2. It is the key to all successful organizations, clubs and groups.  The more a boy helps others, the more he is liked and respected.  The more boys learn this, the better their team, or their club becomes as a place of good fellowship.
  3. Acts of cooperation require discipline, fair play, respect for team and many other qualities that go to make up a fine reputation.
  4. It will yield your team a reputation of being wanted on opponent schedules year after year – for nothing makes one wanted than the reputation of being cooperative.
  5. It will make games more enjoyable because opponents, officials and spectators respect teams for acts of cooperation as well as ability.
  6. It will give opponents no alibi when they lose.  Many poor losers like to hook onto such poor excuses as “lack of cooperation” from the team they lost to.
  7. Spectators often like to root for a cooperative gang of fellows even if opponents rather than a band of soreheads even from their own town.
  8. No greater show of group cooperation is that of fans applauding acts of good sportsmanship or rugged courage on our athletic fields.
  9. When a youngster gets up to give his seat to an elderly person – or when he opens the door to let an older person pass through – it’s usually the result of training in good manners by an intelligent coach.
  10. By banning together in a common cause boys learn the fundamentals of good American citizenship – one for all and all for one.

Handout #317: Success Plan

SUCCESS PLAN

1. CRYSTALIZE YOUR THINKING.  Determine what specific goal you want to achieve.  Then dedicate yourself to its achievement.

2.  DEVELOP A PLAN FOR ACHIEVING YOUR GOAL – AND A DEADLINE FOR ITS ACHIEVEMENT.  Plan your progress carefully; hour by hour, day by day, month by month.  Be organized – Be enthusiastic:  These are the well – springs of your power.

3.  DEVELOP A SINCERE DESIRE FOR THE THINGS YOU WANT IN LIFE.  A “blow-torch” burning desire is the greatest motivator of every human action.  The desire for success implants “success consciousness” which, in turn, creates vigorous and ever increasing “habits of success”.

4.  DEVELOP SUPREME CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF AND YOUR OWN ABILITIES.  Enter every activity without giving mental recognition to the possibility of defeat.  Concentrate on your strengths, instead of your weaknesses . . . on your powers, instead of your problems.

5.  DEVELOP A DOGGED DETERMINATION TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON YOUR PLAN – REGARDLESS OF OBSTACLES – CRITICISMS OR CIRCUMSTANCES – OR WHAT OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT SAY-THINK-OR-DO.  Construct your determination with sustained effort, controlled attention, and concentrated energy . . .OPPORTUNITIES never come to those who wait . . . They are captured by those who dare to ATTACK.  THE SECRET OF OUTSTANDING SUCCESS lies in Personal Motivation and Confidence.

  • PERSONAL MOTIVATION.  Means the development of inner strength, conscious will power, and the determination to reach any goal that you, personally, want to achieve.
    • It’s a proven fact that this ability isn’t inherited.  Obviously, the power, the capacity, the developed skill to achieve outstanding success must come from within people themselves.  It’s the same quality that you possess to a greater or lesser degree right now, at this very moment.
    • SO – if you want to change your wishes into facts, your dreams into realities, your desires into solid achievement, the all important answer is PERSONAL MOTIVATION.
  • CONFIDENCE – comes from experience . . . Experience comes from know-how . . . Know-how comes from having the courage to submit yourself to obstacles, situations, and circumstances that the average person shies away from.  People who lack confidence, who are not goal oriented, stand on the sidelines as passive bystanders.
    • CONFIDENCE stimulates your creative imagination.  No matter what you undertake, you will never do it until you think you can.  The primary element at the beginning of any enterprise – the one factor which will guarantee its success – is CONFIDENCE THAT IT CAN BE DONE!!!

HAPPINESS

HAPPINESS is like a butterfly which, when pursued, stays always just beyond your grasp – but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.

HAPPY is the man who knows what to remember of the past, what to enjoy in the present, what to plan for the future.

Handout #316: Champs Give Their Best . . .

Champs Give Their Best . . .

The thing that makes a champion is obvious enough:

It isn’t any mystic prestidigitator’s stuff.

It’s nothing more than giving to whatever be the chore

The power is in you – and a small scintilla more.

It isn’t any wizardry, it’s not a magic gift;

It’s merely lifting honestly the load you have to lift;

Or, in the game you’re playing, it is usually all your store of

grit and nerve and energy – and just a trifle more.

The thing that makes a champion is simple, plain, and clear;

It’s never being “almost”, “just about”, or “pretty near”.

It’s summoning the utmost from your spirit’s inner core and

giving every bit of it – and just a little more.

“That little more – how much it is.”  As deep and wide and

far as that enormous emptiness from molehill to a star.

The gulf between the earthbound and the eagles as they soar,

THE CHAMPIONS GIVE THEIR BEST – AND ONE IOTA MORE!

Quotes To Ponder . . .

  • Winter is on my head but eternal spring is in my heart.  The nearer I approach the end, the plainer I hear around me the immortal symphonies of the world to come.
  • For half a century I have been writing my thoughts in prose and verse; but I feel that I have not said one-thousandth part of what is in me.
  • When I have gone down to the grave, I shall have ended my day’s work; but another day will begin the next morning.  Life closes in the twilight but opens with the dawn.  – Victor Hugo
  • You can’t turn back the clock, BUT you can wind it up again.
  • The real way to enjoy life, is as a participant.  Perhaps it’s the people who think they’re spectators who spread the word that all pleasure must be paid for.  DON”T pay for any of it . . . Life is free.
  • A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of time.

LAGGARD’S EXCUSE

He worked by day and toiled by night,

He gave up play and some delight.

Dry books he’d read, new things to learn and forged ahead, success success to earn.

He plodded on with faith and pluck, and when he won, men called in LUCK.

Handout #315: The Victorious Attitude . . .

The Victorious Attitude . . .

  • You can only do what you think you can.  You may succeed when others do not believe in you, but never when you do not believe in yourself.
  • The majority of failures in life are simply the victims of their mental defeats.  Their conviction that they cannot succeed as others do robs them of that vigor and determination which self-confidence imparts, and they don’t even half try to succeed.
  • Multitudes of people go through life with the conviction that they are not going to win no matter how hard they work.  They are full of fear and doubt as to the future, and are convinced that they will never get very far anyway, but will always have to plod in mediocrity just barely getting a living; and in all probability that is just what they will do, for they are violating the first law of success. . . “He can who thinks he can.”  Your success or failure is determined by your faith o lack of faith in yourself.
  • It is the victorious mental attitude, the consciousness of power, the sense of mastership that does the big things in the world.  If you haven’t this attitude, if you lack self-confidence, begin now to cultivate it.
  • All positive thoughts are constructive.  All negative thoughts are destructive.  The conviction that you were born to win is a tremendous constructive, creative force, just as the conviction that you are a weakling, an inferior, a born loser, is a destructive force, a destroyer of self-confidence, of power.
  • Self-confidence is the miracle worker of all ages.  It is that mighty invisible power which makes men do the impossible.  It enabled Columbus to hold steadily to his purpose, even when his sailors were in mutiny and he was at their mercy in a little vessel on an unknown sea.  It was his sublime self-faith that gave him the courage to sail on and on into the unknown, entering his diary day after day . . . . “Today we sailed west, which was our course.”
  • If we choose to be no more than clods of clay, as someone has said, then we shall be used as clods of clay for braver feet to tread on.  The world will take you at your own evaluation.
  • If people see that you have put yourself on the bargain counter, that you have marked yourself down, they are not going to put you back with the regular goods again.  You are marked-down as cheap, and you will go at a bargain sale, to them.
  • A famous coach once said, “Who would back you in a race while defeat is in your face.”
  • If you want people to back you in the race of life, you must carry in your face and your manner evidence of the winner, of the conqueror, not of the loser.  You must carry yourself so that people will say of you, as Lincoln said when he saw Walt Whitman pass by, “There goes a man.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I humbly beg for thy Divine blessings, graces and favors.  I ask complete obedience to Thy Divine will, as thou will me to be and not as I will to be.  May my love of Thee, Heavenly Father, be multiplied a trillion times, more than anyone else who has ever loved Thee.  I ask for wisdom and knowledge, so that I may be more worthy of Thy Divine graces.  I ask Thee, Heavenly Father, for thy Divine Blessings, of Thy boundless love and Holiness, so that I may be a more effective instrument of Thy Holy Hand, in doing the work Thou hast chosen for me in serving Thee.

I belong to You, and You alone, Oh Lord, body, soul, heart and mind, my complete being.

Thank you, Father.  Amen.
