Handout #309: The Man Who Thinks He Can!!!

This is one of my all time favorite Coach Bacevich handouts.  I put it on the back of my Grandpa’s program at his funeral.  It epitomizes what he taught me.  It is especially true this week for my son Blake and the St. Xavier Bombers going to the D1 Ohio State Championship football game.  Many people counted them out, and they are just the second team in Ohio history to make it to the Championship game with a 5-5 regular season record.  They are an outstanding group of young men that have put self-interest to the side and have come together for the better of the team!  These young men have the will of champions and they have fought back from behind in their last three play-off games; down 21-3 in 3rd Quarter against Colerain to a 29-23 OT win; down 28-7 in 4th Quarter against Sycamore to a 35-28 OT win, down 21-20 to Pickerington Central to a 29-27 win.  Great teams come together and believe they can win!!!  This post is to Coach Bacevich and the St. Xavier Bombers!

The Man Who Thinks He Can!!!

If you think you are beaten, you are;

If you think you dare not, you don’t!

If you’d like to win, but think you can’t,

It’s almost a cinch that you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost;

For out in the world we find

Success begins with a fellow’s will;

It’s all in the state of mind!

If you think you’re outclassed, you are;

You’ve got to think high to rise.

You’ve got to be sure of yourself

Before you can win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the strongest or fastest man;

But sooner or later the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can!

Handout #308: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

We thank thee, Father, for the care that did not come to try us; the burden that we did not bear,

The trouble that passed by us; the task that we did not fail to do, the hurt we did not cherish;

The friend who did not prove untrue, the joy that did not perish.

We thank thee for the blinding storm that did not lose its swelling; and for the sudden blight of harm that came not nigh our dwelling.

We thank the for the dart unshed, the bitter word unspoken, the grave unmade, the tear unshed, the heart-tie still unbroken.

***************************************************

Thanks Be To God

I do not thank thee, Lord, that I have bread to eat while others starve; nor yet for work to do while empty hands solicit Heaven; nor for a body strong while other bodies flatten beds of pain, No, not for these do I give thanks.

But I am grateful, Lord, because my meager loaf I may divide; For that my busy hands may move to meet another’s need; because my doubled strength I may expend to steady one who faints.  Yes, for all these do I give thanks.

For heart to share, desire to bear and will to lift, flamed into one by deathless Love – Thanks be to God for this! Unspeakable! His gift.  — Jane Alford

The Goal . . .

All roads that lead to God our good;

What matters it, your faith or mine;

Both center at teh goal divine of love’s eternal brotherhood.

A thousand creeds have come and gone;

But what is that to you or me?

Creeds are but branches of a tree,

the root of love lives on and on.

Though branch by branch proves withered wood,

The root is warm . . . with precious wine;

Then keep your faith, and leave me mine;

All roads that lead to God are good.  — Ella Wheeler Wincox

***************************************************

God’s Altar . . .

There is in all the sons of men a love that in the spirit dwells,

That panteth after things unseen, and tidings of the future tells.

And God hath built his altar here to keep this fire of faith alive,

And sent his priests in holy fear to speak the truth – for truth to strive.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

***************************************************

Wasting Time

Lost yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours each set with sixty diamond minutes.  No reward is offered, for they are gone forever.

The biggest sin in life is wasting time.

***************************************************

What God Hath Promised

God hath not promised skies always blue, flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;

God hath not promised sun without rain, joy without sorrow, peace without pain.

But God hath promised strength for the day, rest for the labor, light for the way,

Grace for the trials, help from above, unfailing sympathy, undying love.

— Annie Johnson Flint

********************************************

It Has Been Said

  • One of the mysteries of life is how the boy who wasn’t good enough to marry the daughter can be the father of the smartest grandchild in the world.
  • Hardening of the heart ages people more quickly than hardening of the arteries.
  • A good coach needs a patient wife, a loyal dog and a great quarterback, but not necessarily in that order.
  • When it comes to helping others – some people stop at nothing.
  • Mistrust the man who finds everything good, the man who finds everything evil, and still more, the man who is indifferent to everything.
  • Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow.  Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead, BUT walk decides me, and be my very dear friend.
  • Count your life by smiles not tears, Count your age by friends not years.
  • Love reduces friction to a fraction.

Handout #306: What is a Competitor?

What is a Competitor?

He plays like every day means the championship.  The guy never gives up.  He’s never beat mentally.  He’s a good player.  He comes through for the team.  He is confident.  He is consistent.  He does his job every day, every play.  Setbacks don’t discourage him.  He’s never satisfied with his performance.  He keeps on going play after play – FULL SPEED.  He runs to death.  You can’t relax for a moment.  He doesn’t play cautious.  He’s aggressive – always on the attack.  He’s more interested in the team than personal glory and winning is the most important goal.

***********

Believe in yourself!  Believe that you were made to do any task without calling for aid.

Believe, without growing too scornfully proud, that you, as the greatest and least are endowed.

A mind to do thinking, two hands and two eyes are all the equipment God gives to the wise.

Believe in yourself:  you’re divinely designed and perfectly made for the work of mankind.

This truth you must cling through danger and pain; the heights man reached you can also attain.  Believe to the very last hour, for it is true, that whatever you will you’ve been gifted to do.

Believe in yourself and step out unafraid.  By misgivings and doubt be not easily swayed.  You’ve the right to succeed; the precision of skill betokens the great you can earn if you will!

The wisdom of the ages is yours if you’ll read.  BUT you’ve got to believe in yourself to succeed.

**********

MY CREED

I do not choose to be a common man.  It is my right to be uncommon . . . If I can.  I seek opportunity – not security.  I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the State look after me.  I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fall and to succeed.  I refuse to barter incentive for a dole.  I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the state of calm of — UTOPIA.  I will not trade freedom for beneficence, nor my dignity for a handout.  I will never cower before my master or bend to any threat.  It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefits of my creations, to face the world boldly and say:  “This is what I have done.”

**********

To Any Athlete:

  • Everything cometh to him that waiteth, so long as he who waiteth worketh like hell while he waiteth.
  • Every accomplishment great or small … starts with the decision … I’ll Try.
  • When you hurry in and out of the locker room you hurry in and out of the big league.  – Pete Rose
  • If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.  If you can dream it, you can become it.
  • Fall down seven times, get up eight!
