Handout #297: No Time; Courage – Leadership

NO TIME

I knelt to pray, but not for long, I had too much to do.

Must hurry of and get to work for bills would soon be due; And so I said a hurried prayer, jumped up from off my knees —-My Christian duty not was done, my soul could be at ease.

All through the day I had no time to speak a word of cheer, No time to speak of Christ to friends — they’d laugh at me I feared.

No time, no time, too to do, that was my constant cry – – No time to give to those in need.

At last, t’was time to die.

And when before the Lord I came, I stood with downcast eyes – – Within His hand He held a book, it was the Book of Life.

God looked into His book and said, “Your name I cannot find, I once was going to write it down – but never found the time.” – Unknown

B U R D E N   B E A R I N G

  • No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.
  • Help carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will obey the law of Christ.
  • “I shall pass through this world but once.  Any good that I can do or any kindness that I can show any human being, let me know and not defer it. For I shall not pass this way again.” – Unknown

COURAGE – LEADERSHIP

  • COURAGE is what it takes to stand up and speak; COURAGE is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
  • When success turns an athlete’s head he faces failure.
  • A man who cannot lead and will not follow immediately obstructs.
  • One man plus COURAGE is a majority.
  • PROGRESS comes from the intelligent use of experience.
  • We are all alike; we have eyes, ears, arms, legs AND a head. The difference is in the HEART.
  • COURAGE consists not of blindly overlooking danger, BUT in seeing it and conquering it.
  • Never put your finger on someone’s faults unless it’s part of a helping hand.
  • Common sense is really not all that common.
  • COURAGE conquers all things.
  • Have ideals and live with them.
  • When you ask someone to do a job, FIRST be sure in your mind what it is you want.
  • A leader is best when people barely know he exists . . . When his work is done, his aim is fulfilled. They will say, “We did this ourselves.”

A Family Is . . .

A family is people who grow together in faith, work together in hope, worship together in love.

Bear one another’s faults, share one another’s joy, need one another, support one another, look for God in one another, see God in everyone, live as individuals, are separate yet one.

A family is people who are joined by God’s presence living in each other.

Handout #295: CAN’T . . . ; How a Child Lives

CAN’T . . .

CAN’T is the worst word that’s written or spoken;

Doing more harm than slander or lies;

On it is many a strong spirit broken.

It springs from the lips of the thoughtless each morning

And robs us of courage we need through the day.

It rings in our ears like a timely-sent warning

And laughs when we falter and fall by the way.

CAN’T is the father of feeble endeavor.

The parent of terror and half-hearted work;

It weakens the efforts of artisans clever.

And makes of the toiler an indolent shirk.

It poisons the soul of the man with a vision;

It stifles in infancy many a plan;

It greets honest toiling with open decision

And mocks at the hopes and the dreams of a man.

CAN’T is a word none should speak without blushing;

To utter it should be a symbol of shame;

Ambition and courage it daily is crushing;

It blights a man’s purpose and shortens his aim,

Despise it with all of your hatred of error;

Refuse it the lodgment it seeks in your brain;

Arm against it as a creature of terror.

And all that you dream of you some day shall gain.

CAN’T is the word that is foe to ambition.

An enemy ambushed to shutter your will;

Its prey is forever the man with a mission

And bows but to courage and patience and skill.

Hate it, with hatred that’s deep and undying.

For once it is welcomed ’twill break any man;

Whatever the goal you are seeking, keep trying

And answer this demon by saying, “I CAN.”

How a Child Lives . . .

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.

If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight.

If a child lives with fear, he learns to be apprehensive.

If a child lives with pity, he learns to feel sorry for himself.

If a child lives with jealousy, he learns to feel guilty.

If a child lives with encouragement, he learns to be confident.

If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.

If a child lives with praise, he learns to be appreciative.

If a child lives with acceptance, he learns to love.

If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself.

If a child lives with recognition, he learns to have a goal.

If a child lives with fairness, he learns what justice is.

If a child lives with honesty, he learns what truth is.

If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith in himself and in those about him.

If a child lives with friendliness, he learns that the world is a good place in which to live.

Overheard

  • Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts.  -Luke 24:38
  • Never let the sun set on your anger or else you will give the devil a foothold.  -Eph. 4:27
  • The great difficulty in education is to get experience out of ideas.
  • God stands as it were a handbreath off, leaving his creatures room to grow in.
  • Life is like playing a violin in public and learning the instrument as one goes on.
  • Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.
  • Be not simply good, be good for something.
  • God has put something noble and good into every heart which his hand has created.
  • The only way on earth to multiply happiness is to divide it.

Handout #294: Paradoxical Commandments of Leadership

Paradoxical Commandments of Leadership

  1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
  2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
  3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
  4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
  5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
  6. The biggest men with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men with the smallest ideas. Think big anyway.
  7. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
  8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
  9. People really need help but may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway.
  10. Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

**************************************************************

It is not the critic who counts. Nor the man who points out how the strong man stumbled… or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that, upon other fields, on other days, will bear the fruits of victory.

About all there is success is making promises AND keeping them.

GOOD LEADERS learn to share decisions with others even though they alone must accept responsibility for the results.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

ANGER is often more harmful than the injury that caused it.

SUCCESS – Dedication – Sacrifice – Desire.

1988 Pop Warner Huddle Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Open our hearts and ears

so that we may hear your voice.

Open our eyes so that we may see

that in everyday life

we must make a choice,

To be a winner on and off the field.

Amen
