Handout #281: Three Kinds of Athletes

Three Kinds of Athletes . . .

On all squads there are three kinds of athletes:

FIRST, there is the athlete who is a help.  He is one who takes a keen interest in the whole concern.  He feels that he is a part of the set-up, and takes PRIDE in it.  Every now and then he suggests some improvement.  Often he does more than he is expected to do.  When he is given a job to do he does not enlarge on the difficulties or the responsibility of it.  He just pitches in and does it.

SECONDLY, there is the athlete who is a habit.  He is a good worker, he takes an interest, more or less, in his job, but seldom concerns himself in the least about the whole concern.  He has learned to do one thing, and does it reasonably well.  His work is all a matter of habit.  He hates to be shifted from one job to another.  He lacks drive.  He is a good man, but he has nailed himself down to it . . . to a routine, and sees anything outside that routine as a nuisance rather than an opportunity.

THE THIRD type of athlete is a hindrance.  He is the one who dislikes his job.  He does not want to work, and he almost feels a grievance against anyone who gives him a chance to better his lot.  He never has a good word for anyone or anything.  He is strong on objecting, great on refusing, marvelous on criticizing, but weak on doing.  He is against everything that spells an effort.  He can’t take it.  He never takes correction in good spirit; instead, he walks off with a growl.  He is an athlete who can never be promoted or advanced.  He is a hindrance.

**********************************************************

Why are We So Tired?

We have some irrefutable statistics that show why you are tired, and brother, it’s no wonder you are tired.  There aren’t as many people working as you may have thought – at least according to this survey.

The population in this country is 200 million, but there are 62 million over 60 years of age.  That leaves 138 million to do the work.  People under 21 total 94 million – that leaves 44 million to do the work.  Then there are 21 million who are employed by the government, which leaves 23 million to do the work.  10 million are in the armed forces which leaves 13 million to do the work.  There are 12.8 million in the state and city offices, leaving 200,000 to do the work.  126,000 in hospitals, etc., so that leaves 74,000 to do the work.  However, 62,000 bums or vagrants refuse to work so that leaves 12,000.  11,998 are in jail, which leave 2 people to do the work – that’s you and me brother, and I’m getting tired of doing everything myself.

Handout #280: Enthusiasm

ENTHUSIASM

ENTHUSIASM is “emotion management,” the ability to control the emotional temperature of any personal situation.

ENTHUSIASM – That certain something that makes us great – that pulls us out of the mediocre and commonplace – that builds us Power.  It glows and shines – it lights up our faces – ENTHUSIASM, the keynote that makes us sing and makes men sing with us.

ENTHUSIASM is the way you “squeeze the trigger” to other people’s emotions, they help and support you instinctively.

ENTHUSIASM is the prime method of “persuasion without pressure.”

ENTHUSIASM glows . . . radiates . . . permeates . . . and immediately captures everyone’s interest.

ENTHUSIASM is the “advance man” who paves the way for new ideas.

Maybe the enthusiasts aren’t the most cultured people in the world, but they are the only ones who make history.

ENTHUSIASM – the inspiration that makes us “Wake up and Live” – It puts spring in our hearts, a twinkle in our eye and gives us confidence in ourselves and our fellow man.

If you were to take my money and my other tangible assets from me but let me keep my ENTHUSIASM, it would be but a short time (while) before I’d be as wealthy as ever.

ENTHUSIASM – the maker of friends – the maker of smiles – the producer of confidence.  It cries to the world, “I’ve got what it takes.”  It tells all men that our job is swell – that the house we work for just suits us – the goods we have are the best.

ENTHUSIASM helps us to compete with ourselves, to match today against yesterday.  Only with the compulsive drive of ENTHUSIASM can we find encouragement in past mistakes.

ENTHUSIASM is the yeast that raises the dough.

ENTHUSIASM!!! is the greatest one-word slogan for living ever devised.

ENTHUSIASM – if we have it, we should thank God for it.  If we don’t have it, then we should get down on our knees and pray for it.

ENTHUSIASM is the greatest asset in the world.  It beats money, and power, and influence.

Handout #279: Losers are Made/Not Born

Losers are Made/Not Born

A father is many things to his son: but most of all teacher and idol.

A father this teacher and idol seeks ways to mold this smaller image of himself not into his own image but into someone his own man unique and self-sufficient and not a smudged carbon copy of someone else.

And one of the ways this teacher and idol knows and also explores to help his son reach manhood and maturity simultaneously is sports.

For sports reveal to his son that life is a struggle that skills to handle this struggle must be studies and learned and meshed with the skills of others so that what must be accomplished is accomplished.

Sports also show his son that every struggle has an uncertain outcome no matter what skills he commands.  For every contest chance plays the starring role or calls signals from the bench.

Sports show his son in telescoped time what his father most wants him to know.

The game is never over no matter what the scoreboard reads, no matter what the clock says.  The secret of the game is to do one’s best to persist and endure and as someone said, to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield.

**************************************************************

TALENT is God-Given:  Be GRATEFUL

FAME is Man-Given:  Be THANKFUL

CONCEIT is Self-Given:  Be CAREFUL

**************************************************************

LOYALTY:  If you work for a man, or play for a man, In Heaven’s name work for, play for him;  speak well of him and stand by the institution he represents.  REMEMBER – An ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness.

WINNING:  If you don’t play to win – Why keep score?

CHINESE PROVERB:  If you command yourself – You can command the world.

LIVING:  This is the secret, the explanation of a marvelously successful life – To have a worthwhile purpose for living and to be dedicated to that cause.

SOCRATES:  If all our misfortunes were laid in one common heap, whence every one must take an equal portion, most people would be content to take their own and depart.

ANY TRULY GREAT ATHLETE:  “I’ve always worked on my strengths and weaknesses, – I’ve always taken great pride in my condition.  I always believed conditioning was a great part of the battle.”

Team Play . . .

“T-E-A-M” has to be one of the most trenchant words in the language.  It’s so meaningful, in fact, that our politicians, business people, and advertising hucksters have made a cliche’ out of it.

What is every athlete’s most treasured memory that he caries with him all his life?  It is his team experience:  the guys he played with, the give and take in the locker room, sharing the elation of winning and the heartache of losing.

That’s where the real lessons of sport are learned:  learning to live and play with a lot of different guys, not liking a guy, but playing with him; sacrificing for the team; putting the team ahead of everything else.

How Do You Play With The Team?
