Handout #260: A Friend Is . . .

A Friend Is . . .

  • A friend is one who is a source of sunshine when you are under the weather.
  • A friend is one who strengthens you with his prayers, blessing you with his love, and encouraging you with his hope.
  • A friend is one whom distance is no barrier t o communication, concern or caring.
  • A friend is one whose thoughtfulness is exceeded only by his concern; whose helpfulness is second only to his awareness.
  • A friend is one who believes in you so strongly that you are motivated to stretch, to reach, to achieve beyond your fondest expectations.
  • A friend is one who transforms your loneliness into happiness, your sadness into joy, your gloom into gladness.
  • A friend is one who believes in you when you have ceased to believe in yourself.
  • A friend is one who is on the scene with you when you need him, who quietly leaves you when you want to be alone.
  • A friend is a source of celebration when you feel there is nothing to celebrate.
  • A friend is one who answers when you call  . . . who often answers before you call.
  • A friend is one who is not hard to find when you are penniless.
  • A friend is one who makes your grief less painful, your adversity more bearable.
  • A friend is one who joyfully signs with you when you are on the mountain top, and silently walks beside you through the valley.
  • A friend is one with whom you are comfortable, to whom you are loyal, through whom you are blessed, and for whom you are grateful.
  • A friend is one who warms you by his presence, trusts you with his secrets, and remembers you in his prayers.
  • A friend is one who gives you a spark of assurance when you doubt your ability to fulfill your noblest aspiration, to climb your special mountain, to reach your secret goal.
  • A friend is one who helps you bridge the gaps from loneliness to fellowship, from frustration to confidence, from despair to hope, from setbacks to success.
  • A friend is one who is available to you, understanding of you, and patient with you.
  • A friend is no less a gift from God than a talent; no less a treasure than life itself.

—  William Arthur Ward

NOW – How do you measure up as a friend to others?

NOW – Ask yourself:  How many such friends do I have?

Handout #259: The Art of Thanksgiving

THE ART OF THANKS GIVING …

The art of thanks giving is thanks living.  It is gratitude in action.  It is applying Albert Schweitzer’s philosophy: “In gratitude for your own good fortune you must render in return some sacrifice of your life for other life.”

It is thanking God for the gift of life by living it triumphantly.

It is thanking God for your talents and abilities by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good.

It is thanking God for all that men and women have done for you by doing things for others.

It is thanking God for opportunities by accepting them as a challenge to achievement.

It is thanking God for happiness by striving to make others happy.

It is thanking God for beauty by helping to make the world more beautiful.

It is thanking God for the inspiration by trying to be an inspiration to others.

It is thanking Go for health and strength by the care and reverence you show your body.

It is thanking God for the creative ideas that enrich life by adding your own creative contributions to human progress.

It is thanking God for each new day by living it to the fullest.

It is thanking God by giving hands, arms, legs, and voice to your thankful spirit.

It is adding to your prayers of thanksgiving, acts of thanksliving.

– Wilfred A. Peterson

THE SUREST WAY

If anyone would tell you the shortest, surest way to happiness and all perfection, he must tell you to make it a rule to yourself to thank and praise God for everything that happens to you. For it is certain that whatever seeming calamity happens to you, if you thank and praise God for it, you turn it into a blessing. – William Law

Shakespeare: “Beggar that I am, I even poor in thanks.

Rosetti: “Were there no God, we would be in this glorious would with grateful hearts: and no one to thank.

Skeath: “Let us thank God that He has made it possible for us to give something back to Him.

Handout #258: Let Daily Prayers Dissolve Your Cares . . .

LET DAILY PRAYERS DISSOLVE YOUR CARES …

We all have cares and problems we cannot solve alone

But if we go to God in prayer we are never on “our own” …

And if we try to stand alone we are weak and we will fall,

For god is always Greatest when we’re helpless, lost and small.

And no day is unmeetable if on rising our first thought

Is to thank God for the blessings that His loving care has brought …

For there can be no failures or hopeless, unsaved sinners

If we enlist the help of God who makes all losers winners …

So meet him in the morning and go with Him through the day

And thank Him for his guidance each evening when you pray.

And if you follow faithfully this daily way to pray

You will never in your lifetime face another “hopeless day.”

For like a soaring eagle you too can rise above the “storms of life” around you on the wings of prayer and love.

LITTLE CHILDREN

When God calls little children to dwell with him above,

We mortals often question the wisdom of his love.

For no heartache compares with the death of one small child,

Who does so much to make this world seem wonderful and mild.

Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to his fold,

And so picks a rosebud before it can grow old.

God knows how much we need them and so he takes but few,

To make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view.

Believing this is difficult but somehow we must try,

The saddest word that mankind knows will always be “goodbye”.

And so when little ones depart we who are left behind,

Must realize how much god loves little children for angels are hard to find.

Handout #257: Have You Ever Wondered Why – – –

Have You Ever Wondered Why – – –

  • is it that we often forget that big things are accomplished only by the perfection of minor details.
  • do we dread adversity so much, when facing it is the only way you become stronger.
  • can’t we motivate ourselves when we know that results come through motivation.
  • is it that some seem ashamed to let others know that they pray or read the Bible.
  • should it be difficult to win thanks, express thanks, or merely say, “Thank You”.
  • Can’t we have patience and expect good things to take time.
  • is it so easy to be quick to judge when possessed of only a few facts.
  • is it that it is so easy to see the faults of others and so difficult to see our own.

John Wooden, UCLA           9/30/76

NEED ONE KNOW WHY?

Man in space, a sea of clouds, huge jet engines, who can understand?

A baby’s cry, a hungry man, a woman’s tear, who can understand or tell me why?

The East at dawn, the West at dusk, the stars at night, the mountains tall, the valley green, need one know why?

Must, we know why we are here on earth, does wealth or station prove one’s worth,

Is appearance made in three score plus, a way to measure one of us?

I truly want to find the way, and I know for this I must pray.

And it won’t matter what I say, for He to Whom I’ll speak will know,

What is true and what is show;

To Him all things are very clear, he knows exactly what we are,

And his judgment will be fair, when we are all called There.

Need one know why?
