Handout #256: Apples

Apples . . .

This is the story of a man and his challenge, and of the unique solution that came through one simple idea.  He was an apple grower in the high altitude of the Rocky Mountains.  He knew that the cold climate of the mountains helps firm the fruit and gives it an unusual flavor.  He has built up a thriving business selling his beautiful apples by direct mail, money refunded if not satisfactory.

One year, just as his crop was about ready to be picked, a hail storm made unsightly brown spots all over his apples.  This did not harm the flavor of the fruit, but it certainly made them less attractive to the eye.  He debated whether to send the apples out anyway, with the possibility of making innumerable refunds and the loss of good will that would surely reflect in loss of repeat business the next year, or canceling the orders.

If ever a man felt that this situation was precarious, this man did.  It would seem as if he might be left high and dry with a crop of perfectly good apples that would be a total loss.  He had the presence of mind TO PRAY.  He had a faith obviously built up by long experience with answered prayer.  He knew that there was a way and that if he kept his mind open and receptive, the right idea would come “welling and surging in.”

And come it did.  The apples were mailed as usual – but with the minor change.  In the top box an attractive card was inserted, which read, “Note the hail marks that appear as minor skin blemishes on some of the apples.  These are proof of their growth at a high mountain altitude where sudden chills from mountain storms help firm the flesh and develop the fruit sugars that give them their fine flavor.”  The idea not only saved his crop, but the following year her had thousands of letters asking especially for “hail-marked apples.”

  • Having money AND friends is easy – but having friends and NO money is the REAL accomplishment.
  • This seems to be an era when there are more goodwill tours and less goodwill than any time in history.
  • Criticism is something you can avoid by doing nothing, saying nothing and being nothing.

Follow Through:  Key to Success

ATTITUDE TECHNIQUE

  1. Make a Commitment.  This is where goal-setting from the realistic perspective begins, and causes each person, and group or team to focus on exactly what is desired.
  2. Set a Target Date.  How many times we all have said we are intending to do something and that we will get around to it sooner or later?  The setting of a target date to achieve each commitment is basic, forcing each of us to move in the right direction.
  3. Assemble the Ingredients.  Each project involves knowledge, people, resources, and other items necessary for success.
  4. Give of Yourself.  This is the most difficult and least understood of the seven steps.  Sacrificial giving is fundamental to the success of any unit of people, and is required in the Attitude Technique.
  5. Visualize Yourself Successful.  Time must actually be set aside to sit quietly and see with imagination exactly what we want to happen.  This technique has been proven repeatedly to be crucial to great success.
  6. BELIEVE that What You are Doing Will Succeed.  When Christ himself was asked by people to be healed, he very often asked them what they thought about it.  The response was, “I believe you can heal me.”  Only then did he tell the cripple to stand up and walk, and his statement was, “Your belief has made you well.”
  7. Expect the Continuation of Positive Results.  Step No. 7 has to be earned by a great deal of working on steps 1-6.  Repeated success brings about the expectation that it will continue, and no one has ever been on a great team or organization that did not expect to win every single game or challenge.
  8. When a group of people come together with a common cause and are willing to give sacrificially over a long period of time, the inevitable result is the birth of a FAMILY.  Our definition of a family is a group of people who perform greater than the apparent ability of its common parts.

When the family begins to emerge, groups begin to rely upon the greatest motivator of all, that is LOVE for one another.

It is important to begin with a proper perspective, and one’s perspective can be either optimistic … pessimistic … or realistic.

CHARACTER – To me, character, is being able to say “yes” or “No” to the right and wrong things.

HORACE MAN – I have never heard anything about the resolutions of the apostles, but a good deal about the Acts of the apostles.

ITALIAN PROVERBS – For a web begun, God sends thread.

EMERSON – Our chief want in life is somebody who shall make us do what we can.

ECCLESIASTES 9:10a – “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might.”

JOE NAMETH – Asked if he was sorry about the way he had popped off before the Super Bowl game, he replied:  “No, it was the way I felt.  I always had confidence.  The whole team had confidence.  If you don’t, you can’t win.  If you don’t have confidence, you weren’t raised right.  I was raised in a good family.”

WES UNSELD – Regarding rumors that he would not be good enough for the pros:  “I thought so much about it, that I came to Baltimore in June, two days before I graduated from college.  I didn’t want to come up here and be just another player.  I wanted to be good.”

ROSSETTI – Were there no God, we would be in this glorious world with grateful hearts, and no one to thank.

Anonymous – The highest reward for a man’s toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.

SUCCESS PRINCIPLES . . .

  1.  Winning is the science of being prepared, leaving nothing undone.  A winner is a player who consciously does everything he can think of to prepare himself as completely as possible.  You have to take pride in your accomplishments in order to accomplish fully.
  2. WORK.  Work is simply a synonym for effort.  A 100% effort is not enough.  The world belongs to those who aim for 120%.  Good things just don’t happen, you have to make them happen.  This means extra effort.
  3. WINNING IS FUN.  Everything one does to make winning more likely is fun.  No man alive is truly alive unless he is accomplishing something worthwhile.  We want athletes who set achievable goals, who so dedicate themselves that they cant be swerved from their goals and who, when they get there, take great pride in having got there.

TEAM SPIRIT – FOOTBALL

You must believe in your coaches and teammates.  Encourage teammates in practice, in the locker room and in games.

Keep in your best possible condition, keep up academically, work with your teammates and you’ll be an inspirational leader.

It takes 11 men to win a game.  Have confidence in yourself and in your teammates.  Make each teammate feel that HE is the most important man on the team.

Praise the block on the end of the score.  PRIDE!  POISE!  DESIRE!

THE COACH . . .

I think that he shall never see,

A coach so good that never he

Does have to worry for his job,

Or try to please the supporting mob

Of fans and students and business men,

Who want the team to win again.

They have a ten-game winning streak

They lose but one – Who is up the creek?

Though they had lost to a better team

It is the coach that’s off the beam!
