Handout #248: The Art of Growing Up

The Art of Growing Up

UP is the magic word of growth.  Use it as a guide in growing up into the man you want to be.

GET UP in the morning with determination to make the most of your day.

STEP UP to each task with enthusiasm and dedication.

STAND UP to your problems and difficulties.  Face them and lick them!

THINK UP.  There is an upper level in your mind, live in that!  Keep your thoughts high, and clean and true.

BRACE UP.  Tighten your belt and keep moving forward when the going gets rough.

CHEER UP.  The worst thing that can happen to you can be the best thing that can happen to you – IF you don’t let it get the best of you.

CLIMB UP.  The ladder of success reaches upward rung by rung, but you must do the climbing.  Stretch out your hands.  Remember that “he climbs highest who helps another up.”

MEASURE UP.  Much is required of you today.  Meet the challenge of the times by doing your full share for the common good.

BOUNCE UP when you fall down.  everyone fails and falls down now and then.  Quitters just lie there.  Heroes have the bounce!

LOOK UP.  Remember the words of the Psalmist:  “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh me help.”  Look to God for inspiration and guidance.

REACH UP.  Keep stretching your mind and spirit. Don’t wait to become a great man – be a great boy now.

LIVE UP to the highest and best you know.  Consider how a tree lifts its branches to the sky.  The only way to grow is up.

REFLECTIONS

In the arena of human life, the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action.  –Aristotle

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.  –Plato

Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.  –Henry Van Dyke

Handout #247: Self-Motivation

Self-Motivation

FOR INDIVIDUAL IMPROVEMENT

  • When you are through learning, you are through.
  • Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.
  • Discipline yourself and others won’t have to.
  • Do not mistake activity for achievement.
  • The smallest good deed is better than the greatest intention.
  • You may make a mistake, but you are not a failure until you start blaming someone else.
  • If you are afraid of criticism, you will die doing nothing.
  • The man who is most afraid of failure seldom has to face it.
  • Don’t let yesterday take too much of today.
  • Time spent getting even would be better spent getting ahead.
  • I will get ready, and then perhaps, my time will come.

FOR TEAMWORK

  • Happiness begins where selfishness ends.
  • Politeness is a small price to pay for the good will and affection of others.
  • Forget favors given, remember those received.
  • The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team.
  • It is amazing how much can be accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit.
  • True happiness, freedom, and peace cannot be attained without giving them to someone else.
  • The best way to improve the team is to improve ourselves.
  • You will find, as you look back upon your life, that the moments that stand out are the moments that you have done things for others.
  • No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of to anyone elder.

FOR A RICH, HAPPY, AND SATISFYING LIFE

  • There is nothing stranger in this world than gentleness.
  • The true athlete should have character, not be a character.
  • There future may be when you wish you had gone and what you are not doing now.
  • Revenge is the weak pleasure of a little and narrow mind.
  • When success turns your head, you face failure.
  • There is no pillow as soft as a clean conscience.
  • Your reputations is what others think you are, your character is what you really are.
  • Love is the medicine than can cure all the ills of the world.

Handout #246: The Art of Being Yourself

The Art of Being Yourself

The art of being yourself at your best is the art of unfolding your personality into the man you want to be.  A famous biologist has said that the possibility of even identical twins being wholly alike is one chance to all of the electrons in the world; each man is a unique individual being.

By the grace of God you are what you are.  Glory in your selfhood.  Accept yourself and go from there.

A good place to begin is by having faith in yourself and your destiny.  “Trust yourself,” wrote Emerson, “every heart vibrates to that iron string.”

Champion the right to be yourself.  Dare to be different and to set your own pattern.  Live your own life and follow your own star.

Respect yourself.  You have the right to be here and you have important work to do.

Don’t stand in your own shadow.  Get your little self out of the way so your big self can stride forward.

Make the most out of yourself by fanning the tiny spark of possibility within you into the flame of achievement.

Follow the advice of Socrates:  “Know Thyself.”  Know your strengths and your weaknesses; your relation to the universe; your potentialities; your spiritual heritage; your aims and purpose; take stock of yourself.

Create the kind of self you will be happy to live with all your life.

Consider the words of the hew convert who prayed:  “Oh, Lord, help me to reform the world–beginning with me.”

Be gentle with yourself, learn to love yourself, to forgive yourself, for only as we have the right attitude toward ourselves can we have the right attitude toward others.  — Wilfred A. Peterson

Handout #245: Faith in Myself

Faith in Myself

— A Spartan Athlete

God give me faith in myself.

Not only on the days when I am going great and winning and nothing seems impossible, but on days when I wonder if I am brave enough, smart enough, strong enough.

Don’t let me quit, not ever.  Let me keep faith in myself.  No matter how many people discourage me, doubt me, laugh at me, warn me, think me a fool, don’t let me listen.  Let me hear another voice telling me, “You can do it, and you will.”

If nobody else in the whole world gives a darn or believes in me, let me believe in myself.

I know there will be times when I doubt my own ability, I will be discouraged, on the verge of despair.  Don’t let me give up; hang on to me.  Fan the fires of my faith so that I will try even harder.  Give me even more faith in myself.

You are the source of my abilities and my faith.  I know that you will give me what I ask . . . Faith in Myself.

FEAR and FAITH

Fear imprisons, faith liberates; fear paralyzes, faith empowers; fear disheartens, faith encourages; fear sickens, faith heals; fear makes useless, faith makes serviceable – and, most of all, fear puts hopelessness at the heart of life, while faith rejoices in its God.   — The Treasure Chest

Handout #244: What Do You Want?; Circus Elephants and Limitation . . .; Reaching Out

What Do You Want?

I want opportunity – not “Security.”  I want the “Calculated Risk,” the Dream, the Vision to have ideas and Build.  I want the Right to Fail or Succeed, based on my own Ingenuity, Perseverance and Self–Reliance.

I will not trade my dignity for a handout, Cower before any threat, Bend to ant tyrant.

I want the “Challenge of Life“, not the “Guarantee of Existence.”  I want to stand Erect, Proud and Unafraid.  I want the Privilege To Think and Act for Myself and take whatever consequences that each may bring.

I want to enjoy the Benefits of my creation, to Face Life Head-On and say “THANKS” to those who have loved and died before me and made everything I have possible.

This is the Human Heritage.  It is the Way of Fulfillment.

Circus Elephants and Limitations

An elephant, with his trunk, can easily pick up a one ton load.  Have you ever visited a circus and watched these huge creatures stand quietly while tied to a small wooden stake?

While still young and weak, an elephant is tied by a heavy chain to an immovable iron stake.  No matter how hard he tries, he cannot break the chain nor move the stake.  Then no matter how large or strong the elephant becomes, he continues to believe he cannot move as long as he can see the stake in the ground beside him.

Many intelligent adult humans are like the circus elephant.  They are restrained in thoughts, actions and results.  They never move out any further than the extent of their self-imposed limitations.

If this happens to you and your life . . .Resolve now to uproot the stakes that hold you  . . . Break the chains of hindering habit . . . Become the Man (the Person) You Know You Can Become and Should Become.

Reaching Out

“If you have love for another, then all will know that you are my disciples.”  – Jesus, John 13:35.

“My brothers!  What good is it for someone to say, “I have faith, if his actions do not prove it?” – James 2:14

“freely you have received, freely give.” – Jesus, Matthew 10:8.

“No one should be looking out for his own interests, but for the interests of others.” – Paul

“We are not only our brother’s keeper; in countless large and small ways we are our brother’s maker.” – Unknown
