Handout #217: Success: Football (Athletes)

SUCCESS:  FOOTBALL (ATHLETES)

S – SPIRIT – The #1 quality of all champions.  The ability to put forth the greatest possible effort when the going is toughest.  The ability to come back “off the floor” when all seems lost.

U – UNITY – “Gung Ho” – In Chinese it means “To work in harmony.”  One for all, all for one.  In FBall it means, “I don’t care who has the ball over the goal line, just so it is one of US.”  This means – a TEAM is one, a happy family.

C – COURAGE – “SPARTAN COURAGE NEVER YIELDS.”  There will be times when your team will be out-personnelled – BUT – never to be out-fought, out-spirited or out-hustled.

C – COOPERATION – The spirit of sacrifice for the good of the team.  The mark of all great teams.  YOU may be called upon for this many times.  Whatever your assignment, it is important to the TEAM.  Therefore, perform it to the very best of your ability.  Cooperate with Mom/Dad, your teachers, your coaches, your captains, and your teammates.

E – ENTHUSIASM – HUSTLE!  HUSTLE!  ALL THE TIME.  Be eager, be alert, be full of the three V’s:  Vim, Vigor, and Vitality:  In the squad meetings, in the locker room, on the practice field, on the bench, in the game.  Enthusiasm is a contagious thing – If you are full of ZIP and HUSTLE, your teammates will follow suit.  FBall will be more FUN.

S – SKILL – Master all FBall fundamentals, techniques, and skills for your position.  This can only be accomplished with concentrated effort.  Resolve for every practice:  “today, I will become a better football player (athlete) than I was yesterday.”

S – SPORTSMANSHIP – The TRUE VALUE OF FBALL (SPORTS).  Always play hard, play to win – But at all times observe the GOLDEN RULE:  Be humble in winning, gracious in defeat.  Let it always be said:  “He, His team will always give you a hard, tough game – BUT in the spirit of the rules.

********************************

The man who wins may have been counted out several times . . . . but he did not hear the Referee.

It is better to train today – than to be outclassed tomorrow.

If the game is going against you – keep your head up, set your jaw, and dig in.

The difference between good and great is a little E-X-T-R-A effort.

Be Aggressive – You can’t win on your side of the LOS.

No good blocker and tackler was ever kept off a football team.

Handout #216: All You Need is Desire

All You Need is Desire

D E S I R E – THAT MAGIC word that inevitably crops up in any conversation involving a person’s chances of success in a chosen endeavor.  If we can convince ourselves really to want to attain a goal, there is actually little that cannot be accomplished.

THE POWER OF DEEP DESIRE – Rational thought, to be effective in changing belief and behavior, must be accomplished with deep feeling and desire.

Picture to yourself what you would like to be and have, and assume for the moment that such things might be possible.  Arouse a deep desire for these things.  Become enthusiastic about them.  Dwell upon them – and keep going over them in your mind.  Your present negative beliefs were formed by thought and feelings.  Generate enough emotion, or deep feeling, and your new thoughts and ideas will cancel them out.

FOOTBALL – NOW is the time to set goals for yourself and your team.  You must have a vision, a dream of just what you want to accomplish next fall.  Aim high, look upon your goal as a high ladder, each rung representing the things you must do in order to reach the top.  It will help you – if you write down what you want to achieve.  It is easier to achieve individual goals if you tie them in with team goals.  What kind of team do you want to play on?

PICK AN IDEAL – Someone you respect, admire – another athlete, a friend, a neighbor – someone you want to emulate.

IT HAS BEEN SAID – What we are is God’s gift to us, What we become is our gift to God.  Think about this for a moment.  “The real measure of an athlete is not what he is, but what he could be.”

POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDEKnow what you can do.  Believe in yourself.  Recognize your weakness – then change that weakness into power, and you can become a champion.  You can do what you want to do if you’ll only believe you can.  In addition to desire, deep, down burning desire – you must discipline yourself, you must have determination and finally, you must have dedication.

PLANS – Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized.  Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with overgrowing insistency.

Handout #215: Straight from the Coach

Straight from the Coach

BUILDER OR WRECKER

I watched them tearing a building down, a gang of men in a busy town; With a ho-heave-ho and a lusty yell, They swung a beam and the side wall fell.

I asked the foreman:  “Are these men skilled?  And the men you’d hire if you had to build?”  He gave a laugh and said, “No indeed – Just common labor is all I need.  I can easily wreck in a day or two what builders have taken a years to do.”

And I thought to myself as I went on my way, which of these roles have I tried to play?  Am I a builder who works with care, measuring life with a rule and square?  Am I shaping my deeds to a well-made plan, patiently doing the best I can – Or am I a wrecker who walks the town content with the labor of tearing down?  — Author Unknown

LOCKER ROOM SLOGANS

  • HAVE PATIENCE.  All things are difficult before they become easy.
  • An error doesn’t become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.
  • One cannot always be a hero, but one can be a man.
  • Ideas are funny things; they won’t work unless you do.
  • Learn from the mistakes of others;  you can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.

COURAGE TO CONQUER

Pick a goal in life, pick something worth going after, worth striving for.  If it’s to be an All-American, try to be the very best.  Shoot for the moon, that’s the thing.  Go for the very highest.  And while you’re shooting for the moon, and while you’re going for the goal, remember you have to pay the price.

The price might be constant devotion, constant heartache, constant practice, and loyalty to your coaches.  Give everything you have:  your body, your mind and your soul; give all you have.  You can always depend on Him.

You will discover that HE will give you the courage to conquer, regardless of the problem.

FOR YOUR PERSONAL BULLETIN BOARD (Memorable Quotes)

We will know as much of God as we are wiling to put into practice, and no more.

He that will not reason is a bigot; he that cannot reason is a fool, and he that dares not reason is a slave!

The best kind of pride is that which compels a man to do his very best work, even if no one os watching.

The person who wants to do something finds a way; the other kind finds an excuse.

Don’t blame officials for penalizing your mistakes.

Pick your friends, but not to pieces.

Handout #214: Leaders and Followers

Leaders and Followers

The following passages are taken from a speech given by Vince Lombardi to the American management Association, as reprinted in the February 25, Sporting News:

“This is an age for heroes.  The test of the century is whether we mistake the growth of wealth and power for the growth of strength and character.  We’ve weakened discipline and respect for authority and let freedom of the individual predominate.  It is imperative for a leader to realize that he does exist in the abstract.  He is judged on what he does in a specific situation, and upon what others do to obtain the results that he seeks.”

“It is the obligation of people who are in authority . . . people with leadership ability . . . to see that we are awakened once more to the need to develop a strong interest in competitive spirit.  Those who are in authority fail in that pursuit unless they preserve what has been an American goal . . . to win and to be first in whatever we do.  It takes mental toughness, Spratanism, love, loyalty, teamwork, respect for the dignity of the individual and charity along with humility.”

“We also need followers who will accept authority.  In our search for individual freedom, in struggling to liberate ourselves from ancient creeds, we sometimes have idealized freedom against order.  It has been the new against the old, and, by reducing authority, we have lost discipline.  Thus the freedom . . . too much freedom . . . has had an adverse effect.”

LEADERSHIP

  1. The way the leader looks speaks louder than what he says in many instances.
  2. There ultimately must be action and accomplishment – he must do something.
  3. There is no substitute for work.
  4. He must have cold analytical and appraisal talent – he must know other human talents – he must know other people’s abilities and shortcomings.
  5. He must dismiss all emotionalism and consider it only in the light of what it can do for him.  It is a tool, not a master.

DOING YOUR JOB.  If you want to not only be successful, but personally, happily, and permanently successful, then do your job in a way that puts lights in people’s faces.  Do that job in such a way that, even when you are out of sight, folks will always know which way you went by the lamps left behind.
