Handout #205: Team Spirit!

TEAM SPIRIT

SPIRIT, as defined in the dictionary, means FULL of LIFE, COURAGE, and ENTHUSIASM.

TEAM SPIRIT IN FOOTBALL, then would mean a TEAM which looks alive, one which demonstrates enthusiasm for the game of football in every drill, warm-up, conditioning, or skill/technique mastery, and one with the COURAGE to meet every obstacle associated with the great game of football.

Many of the “so-called” average TEAMS have become CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS because of the underlying feeling of SPIRIT which was established among the players on that TEAM.  SPIRIT is so fundamental to our game that if you don’t have it, you must develop it or you must sacrifice your opportunity to play football.

All values of SPIRIT are merely an ACT unless the participants of the game of football are sincere competitors – A deep-down “burning desire to excel”.  False yelling and talking it up to which boys often resort to in practice and games is very easy to do.  IF it is SINCERE, it CAN (MAY) be a result of good TEAM SPIRIT.

TEAM SPIRIT includes the attitudes (P.M.A. – on and off the field), the sincere desire, the co-operation, the self-discipline, the sacrifice, the willingness to work (to give “Extra”), and the WILL TO WIN, of each boy on the football squad.

If these things are present, then we will never be late or miss a single practice without just cause, go “ALL OUT” in every practice session, sincerely help those players who need your assistance, “Root” for each player in the game – INCLUDING the PLAYER who may be playing ahead of you, never looking for an excuse for getting out of your duty, obeying all training rules, being a leader by example, and being determined that no football team shall ever defeat our team unless they are far superior to ours.

FOOTBALL is a NATIONAL GAME of great importance.  It is a game of CONTACT and is the only one that girls haven’t as yet, attempted to play.  If you DON’T POSSESS A GENUINE LOVE, DESIRE, for CONTACT that is connected with the game of football, you will be doing yourself, our large student body, and the adults of our community, a favor by not coming out for or continuing in football.

A team with FOOTBALL SPIRIT should sincerely want to HUSTLE and RUN, HIT HARD, BLOCK HARD, TALK IT UP in practice, in games, and on the sideline.

If we generate the necessary TEAM SPIRIT, ENTHUSIASM for the game, A DESIRE and DETERMINATION to always PRACTICE and PLAY TO WIN EVERY GAME – NO ONE SHALL BEAT US.

HOW WILL YOU MEASURE UP?

Handout #204: Perfection of ***Fundamentals***

Perfection of ***Fundamentals***

Accurately and persistently pursue the perfection of fundamentals with an understanding mind.

LEARN to do all skills and fundamentals RIGHT.  Visualize, walk thru, then “trot” through in slow motion – then execute at full speed.

PRACTICE skills and fundamentals with concentration.  STRIVE to make each succeeding rep (repetition) BETTER.

Do not interfere with the rights of others.  Don’t be envious and jealous of others.  MASTERY of all football techniques is a matter of PRIDE.  You must WANT to be the BEST.

BELIEVE in yourself, your ability to improve.  What others have done, YOU can do better.

WELCOME criticism.  You cannot become a great competitor without knowing and correcting your faults.

SEEK the TRUTH.  What you think in unimportant unless it is the TRUTH.

PLAY the games according to the rules (the letter as well as the spirit.  Don’t stoop to petty (shady) practices.

Don’t let difficulties, defeats, failures get you down.  A champion THRIVES on obstacles.  He is tuned to meet all situations.  He knows how to adjust.

Look at the game in its entirety.  Be courteous and respect both the opponents and officials.  PLAY FAIRLY.  Do the same for your teammates.  Help them make the game great and it will make you greater.

Continual growth is essential to FOOTBALL EXCELLENCE.  A great competitor is critical of self.

PERSISTENT PRACTICE will bring success.  You can’t (don’t) get to be an artist overnight.  You will become a great athlete if you keep everlastingly doing things RIGHT.

“Trust not yourself; but your defects to know; Make use of every friend . . .and every foe.”

THIS IS THE CHAMPIONSHIP WAY

Handout #203: Becoming a Man . . .

Becoming a Man . . .

I used to think, when I was small, that all I needed to be a man, was just grow up.  That was before I knew so much of grown-up males who lack as much that manhood needs as when they were juveniles and dreamed of manly deeds.  So I have learned this much, at least, since when my lips began; It takes much more than growing up to be a real man.

“When I grow up and be a man,” you hear the small boy say, as if merely growing large they should be a man someday.  But, knowing manhood’s requisites in larger sense, they’ll learn, there’s much besides their body growth for which they ought to yearn.  The stalely St. Bernard is more than just a larger pup, it takes more to be a man than just growing up.

Fine breath of vision. self-control, and boundless charity, a gentler tongue, a stronger faith, more perfect clarity.  In spirit-vision; patience vast – more patience still, and more;  Wisdom to now – and to forget – all that has gone on before; courage to smile through sorrow fill unto unto its brim your cup – More is required, to make a man, than merely growing up.

***********************************

Playing Square . . .

Don’t count the game as lost, my boy, because the runs are more for the opposing team than yours.  What matter is the score?

Why, being beaten cant’t impair your courage when you’re playing square.

When bigger game and bigger stakes are your to lose or win.

Don’t waste your time connivin’ for advantage – just dig in and do your best to claim your share; But first be sure you’re playing square.

***********************************

Happy Home . . .

Six things are requisites for a happy home:

Integrity must be the architect and tidiness the upholsterer.  It must be warmed by affection and lighted by cheerfulness, and industry must be the ventilator renewing the atmosphere and bringing in fresh salubrity day by day; while overall, as a protective canopy and glory, nothing will suffice except the blessing of God and His love as it dwells in each of our hearts.

***********************************

Someone said it . . .

  • Defeat may serve as well as victory to shake the soul and let the glory out.
  • You may be on top of the heap . . . but remember you’re still part of it.
  • You shouldn’t blame the coach for being a crank if the players aren’t self-starters.
  • We can live if we can love.
  • There are many defeats more triumphant than victories.
  • Prosperity is only an instrument to be used, not a deity to be worshipped.
  • It’s what we learn after we know it all that really counts.

D – Discipline

E – Enthusiasm

S – Sacrafice

I – Initiative

R – Responsibility

E – Effort

Handout #202: Winning Edge: Use of Visualization

Winning Edge:  Use of Visualization

1.  Basic Theory:

  • All actions start with thoughts.
  • Learn by trial and error.
  • Once a correct or successful response is learned, it is remembered for future use (forget failures).
  • Every person has a builtin guidance system or goal-striving device.
  • Mind cannot tell the difference between a real or imagined experience.
  • Principles:  (1) Must have a goal or target; (2) Must be oriented toward end results; (3) Do not be afraid of mistakes; (4) Skill learning is by trial and error.

2.  Picture self in a certain manner – nearly same as actual performance.

3.  Before we can be, we must become, before we become, we must be able to visualize our goals.

4.  If you want to achieve a thing, see it, visualize it, close your eyes a moment.  Get the mental picture.  Practice learning to think in pictures.  It must be mentally accomplished before it can be materially accomplished.

5.  Use of visualization on own:

  • You must believe that mind cannot tell the difference between real and imagined experience.
  • If you repeat something successfully over a long period of time, it becomes a habit.
  • If you practice something successfully in your mind, it is almost like actually doing it.
  • Visualize techniques, skills, charges, etc. but always successfully:  The more realistic you visualize, the more closely it will be associated with the real techniques, etc.
  • This is easy practice – requires no physical effort, only concentration of the mind.
  • You can visualize at any time – in the morning, or before bed-time, at lunch, on the “throne”, etc.
  • If you visualize something enough when do actually do it, you will have a feeling of having done it before successfully.
  • Helps to develop the habit of thinking positive.
  • Does not replace practice or on the field technique – it is only a learning aid – it can give you the extra edge.
  • It is not easy to do at first – it requires concentration on your part – you must develop the habit of visualizing.
