Handout #192: A Message to Mom and Dad

A Message to Mom and Dad . . . .

It is our well-considered opinion, after nearly fifty years in football – as player and coach, that the game is worth playing.

FOOTBALL, in its rightful place, is the most wholesome and valuable sport in schools and colleges today.  As no other sport or pastime, it teaches a boy in his formative years to control and command his powers; to focus them upon a single end, and to mobilize them quickly and completely.

FOOTBALL teaches him to think fast and realistically, to disregard pain and risk in pursuit of a desired end, and to subordinate his interests to those of the group.  It teaches him to call upon and expend in an emergency his last reserve of strength and courage and to pour out all his energy in furious effort.  At the same time, he learns to observe the rules of the game, regard the rights of others and stay within the limits dictated by decency and sportsmanship.

FOOTBALL not only teaches the boy the will to win and the way to win, but something elseIt teaches him how to meet defeat.  When he is defeated, what is his attitude?  Does he curl up and quit?  Does he whine?  Does he attack the sportsmanship and ability of his opponent?  Or does he keep his chest out and his head up and face the world with clear eyes and self-respect?  In FOOTBALL, he will learn to consider defeat merely as a temporary setback, and in his heart he will echo the words of a brave old Scotsman wounded in battle:

“Fight on, my men,” Sir Andrew said, “A little I’m hurt, but not yet slain:

I’ll just lie down and bleed awhile, and then I’ll rise and fight again.”

This is training; it seems to us, that turns a young man toward good and useful citizenship.  We reiterate that football is a game worth playing, that it is worth playing well, and that it cannot be played well unless it is played hard.  If this book can help spread that philosophy and contribute a little something to its practical application, our efforts have brought a rich reward.

WE ARE MOST PLEASED, HAPPY AND PROUD TO HAVE YOUR SON ON THE ROGER BACON SQUAD.  YOU ARE TO BE CONGRATULATED FOR GIVING YOUR SON THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN FOOTBALL.

Cordially,

Bron Bacevich

Handout #191: “Blue-Chipper”

BLUECHIPPER

A “Blue-Chipper” is the kind of kid that makes coaching the greatest profession in the world.

The kind of kid that makes a team a winner.

“Blue-Chippers” come in all sizes and temperaments.  He may never say a word in the locker room, on the practice field or in the game, or he may be one of the “gung ho” type, a real holler-type of guy.

The kind of kid that comes up to you prior to the start of the Big Game, and says, with complete confidence, “Don’t worry, Coach, We’ll win this game.”

He is the kid that will boost your spirits when you are feeling low.  And, when you have lost a very tough game, he comes up to you, and, in all sincerity, says, “Coach, we let you down – you gave us your very best – we were well prepared, it was all our doing that we lost, not yours.”

A “Blue-Chipper” is the kind of kid you hate to see graduate.

If you are fortunate as I have been, and you have this kind of kids on your team (squad), when evening comes around and you’re reflecting on the practice you just had, and it was a real good practice – your thoughts are – “Dear God – thank you for the “Blue-Chippers.”

Handout #190: Keep Cool . . .

KEEP COOL . . .

TEMPERAMENT – The man who is bigger than his job keeps his cool.  He does not lose his head, he refuses to become rattled, to fly off in a temper.  The man who would control others must be able to control himself.  There is something admirable, something inspiring, something soul-stirring about a man who displays coolness and courage under extremely trying circumstances.

A good temper is not only a business asset, it is the secret of health.  The longer you live, the more you will learn that a disordered temper breeds a disordered body.  B. C. Forbes

PLAYING SQUARE . . . Don’t count the game as lost, my boy, because the runs are more for the opposing team than yours.

What matter is the score?  Why, being beaten can’t impair your courage when you’re playing square.

When bigger game and bigger stakes are yours to lose and win, don’t waste your time connivin’ for advantage – just dig in.

And do your best to claim the share; but first be sure you’re playing square.

****************************************

OPPORTUNITY . . .  They do me wrong who say I come no more when once I knock and fail to find you in; for every day I stand outside your door, and bid awake, and rise to fight and win.

Wail not for precious chances passed away, wail not for golden ages on the wan!  Each night I burn the records of that day; and at sunrise every soul is born again.

****************************************

FREEDOM must be constantly won and re-won.  It cannot survive unless those who cherish freedom are prepared to nourish, live by, defend and develop it.

GOOD, BETTER, BEST:  Never let it rest, till your Good is Better, and your Better is Best.

AGGRESSIVENESS – We must be aggressive for what is right if our way of life is to be saved from those who are aggressive for what is wrong.

ENTHUSIASM – to activate others, to get them to be enthusiastic, you must first be enthusiastic yourself.

****** Trouble is a great sieve through we which we sift our acquaintances:  those who are too big to pass through are friends.

****** We are not only our brothers keeper; in countless large and small ways, we are our brothers maker.

Handout #189: Training Rules: Why?

Training Rules:  Why?

CHAMPION football players have SPEED and are in Tip-Top CONDITION, they have a BURNING DESIRE to excel, they have COURAGE, and they LOVE CONTACT; to BLOCK and TACKLE with authority.

Strict observance of Training Rules will ensure good condition.  CONDITIONING is the biggest single factor in the success of the individual and the team.  Conditioning means total commitment and dedication to prepare the mind and body to perform at 100% plus efficiency.

EVERYTHING ELSE BEING EQUAL, THE BEST CONDITIONED TEAM WILL WIN!!!

What do we mean by Training Rules?  Our approach is one of good, sound sense.  Football is a very strenuous sport.  It requires the best possible physical and mental condition.  NOT ONLY from the standpoint of efficiency in playing the game, but more importantly, from the standpoint of your well-being.   The better the physical condition, the better your attitude, the less chance for injury.

Smoking and Drinking for an athlete in training are taboo – YOU CAN’T BE A CHAMPION AND DISSIPATE.

To be at your Physical and Mental best, you must have sufficient sleep and rest at regular hours.  This is the time that your body undergoes repairs.

To build up your strength, your resistance, and to restore or store up energy, you must have a well-balanced diet.  WHAT and HOW you eat at mealtime is very important.

You are in school, primarily, to get the very best possible education.  In order to get your studies as well as sufficient rest, you must observe regular hours during the week.

ALL THESE THINGS SPELL OUTS P I R I T  of  S A C R A F I C E

TRAINING is both an individual and team function.  YOU cannot play and do your best if your teammates are not in good condition – and doing their level best.  Therefore, it is the concern of EACH and EVERY player to check on himself and his teammates on the strict observance of squad training rules or CODE.

YOU, as a football player, cannot do the same things other students do.  If you think more of BREAKING TRAINING than of making the necessary sacrifices for the good of the team, then you don’t belong.  It is best for you not to take out a uniform or to turn it in in case you already have been issued one.  TO PLAY ON A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM, YOU HAVE TO BE A CHAMPION YOURSELF.  With Training Rules, as with practice performances, Set An Example, be a leader for the rest of the squad.

*************************************

  • Don’t be afraid of waisting time by learning something you are not required to know.
  • The only young man who never makes a mistake is the young man who never does anything.
  • A football game is a conflict between the “After you, my dear Gaston” habits on the one hand, and “VENI, VIDI, VICI” habits on the other hand.
  • QUALITY is never an accident.  It is always the result of intelligent effort.  There must be a WILL to produce a superior player or team.
