Handout #183: Making Men Out of Boys: (What it Takes) . . .

MAKING MEN OUT OF BOYS:  (WHAT IT TAKES) . . .

Never has it been so difficult for boys to grow into men.

Becoming a man is not a matter of chronology.  It is a matter of proof.  Throughout the history of mankind, boys have had to prove themselves men.

To become a man, it has always been necessary for boys to associate with men, as helpers on father’s farm, as apprentices to craftsmen, as squires to knights, as water boys to baseball teams.  Through such association they learn the secrets of the adult culture; what rituals to observe, how to care for equipment, how to drink and curse and fight, how to earn and maintain the respect of other men in a society of men.

But today most boys are separated from the lives of men.  Men leave for factory of office early in the morning commuting many miles to work.  They do not return until evening.  Boys are brought up by mothers and school teachers.

Hence boys have no ideas what their fathers do for work.  They have no idea what a man does that makes him a man.

So the vast majority of boys are excluded from the world of men and denied the chance to exercise their powers.  Physical or intellectual.  Is it any wonder that there is a youth problem?

Boys need challenges.  Their whole being cries out for them.  To face starvation, the possibility of death at enemy hands, the risks of failure in school or work or business, and then to triumph over these dangers — these are the stuff of human growth, of maturity.

It takes men to make men.  Mothers cannot do it by themselves.  Nor can high schools.  Nor colleges.

— S. I. Hayakawa

COMMITMENT . . .

Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.  Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is obe elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans.  That the moment one definitely commits oneself, the providences move, too.  All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.  — William H. Murray

The Five “S’s” that are necessary for Football:

  1. Spirit
  2. Speed
  3. Skill
  4. Savvy
  5. Size

Important – if you have the first four, don’t worry about the fifth.

DOING YOUR BEST.  Regardless of what you put in, every game boils down to doing things you do best, and doing them over and  over again.

Handout #182: Random Thoughts . . .

RANDOM THOUGHTS

Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can reach. Don’t bother just to be better than your contemporaries and predecessors: Try to be better than yourself.

Wm. Shakespeare: He is not worthy of the honeycomb that shuns the hive because the bees have stings.

Success isn’t how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started.

KINDNESS is the overflowing of self upon others. We put others in the place of self. We treat them as we would wish to be treated ourselves. We change places with them. For the time self is another and others are self. Our self-love takes the shape of complacence in unselfishness.

THE BEAUTY OF WORK – The beauty of work depends upon the way we meet it, whether we arm ourselves each morning to attack it as an enemy that must be vanquished before night comes – or whether we open our eyes with the sunrise to welcome it as an approaching friend who will keep us delightful company and who will make us feel at evening that the day was well worth the fatigue.

THREE THINGS ARE NEEDED … In order that people may be happy in their work, three things are needed: They must be fit for it; they must not do too much of it; and they must have a sense of success it – not a doubtful sense, such as needs some testimony of other people for its confirmation, but a sure sense, or rather knowledge, that so much work has been done well, and fruitfully done, whatever the world may say or think about. – JOHN RUSKIN

Have thy tools ready, GOD will find thee work.

SUCCESS

If you want to be not only successful, but personally happily, and permanently successful, then do your job in a way that puts lights in peoples’ faces. Do that job in such a way that, even when you are out of sight, folks will always know which way you went by the lamps you left behind.

Before God’s footstool to confess a poor soul knelt and bowed his head; “I failed,” he cried. The Master said, “Thou didst thy best – That Is Success!”

NEVER RETURN A KINDNESS … PASS IT ON.

KINDNESSIs infectious. One kind action leads to another. Our example is followed. This is the greatest work which kindness does to others – that it makes them kind themselves.

CONCENTRATION … Every great man has become great, every successful man has succeeded, in proportion he has confined his powers to one particular channel.

Handout #181: She is My Mother . . .

SHE IS MY MOTHER

A MOTHER TAKES ALL …

  •  A Mother takes the all. She accepts the whole child.
  • All its discomforts. All its cries.
  • All its struggles.  All its needs.
  • All its foolishness.  All its sleeplessness.
  • All its wants. All its whims.
  • All its sickness. All its washings.
  • All its hungers. All its thirsts.

Wise King Solomon* She would not take the half. * I Kings 4:25-27

*********************************

A MOTHER’S HEART …

Your heart, because you shared it, became an important part of my world.

You were my model for laughter and sharing – for anger and caring – for helping others and for loving all.

Your feelings have shaped the realness of my heart.

Perhaps, by carrying your reflection with me for a time beyond you, I may share your gift of love in the hourly doings of each my days, with my friends, my children, with each wayfaring stranger, and they in turn, perhaps, with their own.

All that has come from you, and passes through me, is certainly one of your claims to immortality.

*********************************

MOTHER, THE UNIVERSAL SUFFERER

Why bears the Mother such a burden? Why accepts she her children’s load?

She bears the cross to prevent her child from being placed upon it.

She, the Mother, the Universal Sufferer, attempts atonement for the erring child with her own pain, seeking redemption for the imp, with own anguish.

Right or wrong, lion-like, she defends the hapless child tooth and nail. As she carries her child’s cross, she herself is borne upon it.

So much so, that perhaps some day, even at the Judgement Seat when some guilty wretch cries out, “but what have I done that Thou wouldst leave me enter?” the Rolling Thunder might respond, “thy Mother prayed!” *

* Isaiah 66:3

*********************************

LABOR OF LOVE …

Many have seen the fruits of your long labor of love. Your mature children now tramp their own paths in step to their own drummer.

See them? See how they make music with their giggles, and yells, and cheers?

Such a lively tempo of jumps, and climbs, and runs!

I, too, am one of these, stepping, to my own tune as I march … towards Infinity.

LIVING WITH PRIDE

JESUS always followed what most interested the people. He talked about the lessons found in everyday life. You can be sure He would find many lessons in American sports. QUALITY isn’t something that can be promised into an athlete. It must be put there. If it isn’t there, the finest sales talk in the world won’t act as a substitute. C. G. Campbell

  • To cultivate KINDESS is a valuable part of the business of life.
  • A favor is that kindly deed … beyond a friendly smile.
  • Last night our High School Band played Beethoven. Beethoven lost.
  • The important thing in life is not what belongs to us, BUT what we belong to.
  • You must like people for what they are not because they are the sort of people you like.
  • We are all equal, in that we are all different.
  • You can judge a leader by the size of problems he tackles — People nearly always pick a problem their own size, and ignore or leave to others the bigger or smaller-ones.
  • No group of men can ever be whipped if they hang together and refuse to be beaten.
  • Without Ambition and Enthusiasm for your work …. The parade will pass you by.
  • If you ask for yourself what you deny others, you’re asking is a mockery.
  • If you’re looking for Love, bring a little with you.
