Handout #158: Sleep and Sports; Athletes and Citizenship

Sleep and Sports

Not even an athlete worn out from practice, sleeps like a log.  Everyone “tosses” and “turns” in their sleep in varying degrees.   This factor (termed “motility”) has been measured in scientific experiments.  Sleep scientists know the average motility of the average person.  They can measure any individual’s average motility in normal sleep.

Many factors influence the number of tosses and turns.  Hard physical exercise does not seem to be one of these factors but competitive activity with its emotional component steps up motility (indicating restlessness).  The extent of interference with sleep depends on the emotional makeup of the athlete.

Sleep has been called “the great restorer.”  The Athlete, because of the wear and tear of vigorous physical activity, in in particular need of such restoration.  The old maxim of 8 hours of sleep is still a good minimum for the average person.  But many trainers and team physicians advocate nine hours or more, even at the high school and college level.  Sleep needs differ, but habit is a strong influence.  Because of this factor, a layer often gets less sleep than he really needs for top performance.

A safe recommendation by a high school coach is nine hours of sleep for each player.  Few high school athlete can remain in top condition with less than this amount.  The coach should note variable needs and advise those athletes who seem to require extra rest and sleep.  Sleep, along with nutrition, is probably one of the most important factors in the training program (regimen).  – American Medical Association

Athletes and Citizenship

You know, Coach, when the day comes that you and I are not proud of this great country, then we are in serious trouble.  Today our country is fair game for comedians, unhappy people and critics whose sole aim is to degrade and downgrade everything American.  We who are educating good citizens, and building leadership qualities amongst our students, need to express how we truly feel about this great country.

High school athletics certainly reflect the positive and creative forces of democracy in action.  We take great pride in our athletes who represent their fellow students and communities each time they don their uniform and compete.  We do develop and instill citizenship in our athletes.  We get a great thrill from living in a country where young men can compete against other young men for fun, and not for life or death.  Citizenship is the trademark of interscholastic athletics – it cannot be overemphasized!

Handout #157: Champion Athlete: How?

CHAMPION ATHLETE:  HOW?

REGARD YOURSELF AS A WARRIOR WHO IS DESTINED TO SUCCEED AGAINST ALL ODDS.

Each warrior must take care that his spirit is never broken.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF FAILING BECAUSE A MAN WHO IS AFRAID OF FAILING WILL NEVER WIN, ANY MAN WHO IS AFRAID TO DIE WILL NEVER LIVE.

Strong will to win is more important than a strong body.

KEEP YOUR MIND FILLED WITH EXPECTATIONS OF VICTORY, NO MATTER WHAT . . . 10 times . . 100 times a day, SHAKE ALL YOUR THOUGHTS OF DEFEAT FROM YOUR HEAD AND LEARN TO EXPECT VICTORY.

If you are to live, you must face adversity because a man must have a battle if he is to truly live.

NEVER YELL AT YOUR ENEMY.  AN OLD SAYING GOES . . . “AROUSE A BEE AND IT WILL COME AT YOU WITH THE FORCE OF A DRAGON.”

Weapons that are most effective are inside you; Your attitude, spirit, will, energy, power, knowledge AND commitment to move forward.

ANTICIPATE YOUR ENEMY’S GREATEST EFFORT.  ONE SHOULD NEVER ASSUME THAT HIS OPPONENT WILL NOT HOLD THEIR OWN.  IF IN SUCH AN ATTACK THE ENEMY STIFFLY RESISTED, ONE’S ENTIRE FORCE WOULD BE DISHEARTENED.

Really focus and concentrate on your game, not your opponents.

RECOGNIZE THAT OPPORTUNITY COMES ONLY ONCE IN A CRISIS.

If the enemy stays spirited it is difficult to defeat him.  The road to the spirit – yours and the opponents is through the mind.  All victories are first won there, and all losses first occur there too.  It has nothing to do with IQ, but with inner power.

ONLY LET THE MIND RUN THE BODY.  NEVER LET THE MIND TELL THE BODY WHAT TO DO.

Revere your fellow warriors because it is through them that you will be motivated and sustained through the difficult battles.

Handout #156 – three years of weekly posts!  I hope everyone gets as much enjoyment out of these handouts as Coach Bacevich did in creating them and as much enjoyment I get in distributing them to so many people on a weekly basis.  Thank you to everyone who has subscribed to this website blog over the years.  May the Good Lord shower all of you with his blessings!

Vince Lombardi’s Football Creed

I owe most everything to football, a game which demands from each man a contribution of spirit!

Football is a game, I think, a great deal like life, in that a young man’s personal commitment be toward success, toward victory, ultimate victory, which must be pursued with all one’s might.

Each week there is a new encounter, each year a new challenge, the color and display linger only in memory.  But the spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel – these are the things that endure.  These are the qualities which are so much more important than any of the events which occasion them.

The quality of any young man’s life has got to be a full measure of that young man’s personal commitment to excellence, and to victory, regardless what field he may be in!

I would say that is my football creed.

Vincent Lombardi
