Handout #154: What Do You Think?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

NAPOLEON – (When asked the importance of Morale), said, “Three to one in favor of morale over material.”

LEONARDO DA VINCI – O Lord, thou givest us everything, at the price of effort.

THE OLD COACHThe Real Measure of An Athlete is not what he can do in comparison with others, but against his own better self.

******************************

THE PERFECT UMPIRE

Umpiring is the only profession

Where you have to be perfect to start,

And worry about working your way up,

From Little League to big; whichever part.

According to most of my “fans”

“Shake your head, ya eyeballs are stuck!”

“Ball Four!” “Strike Three!” “TIME OUT!”

I’m blind, can’t see, without a doubt.

Disgusting, it seems to me,

Being one of these well-known goofers,

Why in most cases, I can’t see,

I keep doing my job most expertly.

Why? Well sure you know

It’s for the money, the fame, the game.

Oh, but not really at all,

It’s just me, I love the pain.

– Just some Old Umpire

********************************

YOU’RE A COACH AND YOU HAVE WON – AND WINNING IS:

The end of a long journey you under took with a commitment to each other. Standing on the summit with those who trusted and followed you;

Having a shared experience so special that you’ll remember it even better than it was;

Feeling the acclaim of the close and the distant blended into a moment when time stands still.

******************************

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN – By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

THINK ABOUT IT – It isn’t the weight of the load that brings a man down … it’s the way he carries it.

— All mankind is divided into three classes: those that are immovable, those that are moveable, and those that move. To which class do you belong?

*****************************

COOPERATIVENESS is not so much learning how to get along with others as taking the kinks out of yourself so that others can get along with you.

EDUCATION is what’s left when all the facts are forgotten.

SUCCESS – The dictionary is the only place in the world where success comes before work.

Handout #153: Winning Words . . .

WINNING WORDS …

  • When you are in any contest, you should work as though there is, to the very last minute, a chance to lose.
  • A lot of nice, fat gobblers would strut less – if they could see into the future.
  • One way to go under is to grow overconfident.
  • Always remember that if you got all you paid for there would not be enough to go around.
  • The trouble with some people who stop to think is that they stay parked.
  • Play hard, play tough, play rough, but play clean.
  • Your must feel your best to play your best – obey Training rules.
  • A winner paces himself; a loser has only two speeds – hysterical and lethargic.
  • What I gave, I have; what I spent, I had; what I left, I lost by not giving.
  • When your work speaks for itself do not interrupt.
  • Be a champion in practice. That is where champions are made.
  • Some can teach you to do, and some can teach you to think, but you alone must decide after doing and thinking.
  • Think fit, Look fit, Be fit.
  • A winner shows he is sorry by making up for it; a loser says, “I’m sorry,” but does the same thing the next time.
  • Keep in step with your best self and you need not worry about the rest of the parade.
  • The measure of a man is the size of his thoughts.
  • A champion must have the desire for perfection, and the will to punish himself in the process.
  • Success is deaf; big talk does not compensate for small accomplishments.
  • Teamwork means success – work together – win together.
  • After all is said and done – more is said than done.
  • Golf is like taxes – you drive hard to make the green and then wind up in the hole.
  • You should not blame the coach for being a crank if the players are not self-starters.
  • Nothing is impossible. We merely do not know yet how to do it.
  • Backbone will not get you anywhere if the knob at the top is made of the same material.
  • If you can keep your head in the midst of all this confusion – you just do not understand the situation.
  • A good disposition is important. All great players have it.

Handout #152: My Dreams . . . Thank You God

MY DREAMS …

My dreams are not tomorrow-nor yesterday.

For yesterday is gone, and on its way.

And by tomorrow it may be much too late

To find my way through darkness and through fate.

When you have reached a certain span in life,

Today is all that counts, for fun or strife.

The past is blurred with fogs and mists and myth.

The future is too brief to bother with.

I dream today with no vain, vague regrets

For yesterday and all its unpaid debts,

With no fear of the future’s fading sun,

Since it may end before this rhyme is done.

I dream of romance and a song that rings

Above the duller, elemental things,

Not caring what may happen to skies dark or blue,

If I can know that just one dream comes true.

Grantland Rice

********************************

THERE IS NO DEATH … In one sense there is no death. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond his departure. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eyes, talking to you in the familiar things he touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. He lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew him.  – ANGELO PATRI

********************************

THANK YOU, GOD!

Thank You, GOD for little things that often come our way.

The things we take for granted but don’t mention when we pray.

The unexpected courtesy, the thoughtful, kindly deed.

A hand reached out to help us in the time of sudden need.

O make us more aware, dear God, of little daily graces that come to us with “sweet surprise” from never-dreamed-of places.

********************************

HAST THOU NO SCAR?

Hast thou no scare?

No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand?

I hear thee sung as mighty in the land, I hear them paid thy bright ascendant star,

HAST THOU NO SCAR?

Hast thou no wound?

Yet I was wounded by the archers, spent, leaned me against a tree to die; and rent BY ravening beast that compassed Me, I swooned:

HAST THOU NO WOUND?

No wound, No Scar?

Yet, as the Master shall servant be, And, pierced are the feet that follow Me;

But thine are whole; can he have followed far

Who has no would and no scar?

********************************

A characteristic of the great saints is their power of levity. Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly. One “settles down” into a sort of selfish seriousness; but one has to rise to a gay self-forgetfulness. A man falls into a “brown study”; he reaches up to a blue sky.

Handout #151: It Pays Off

Jordan.JPGThis was a difficult week as Jordan Hoak, the daughter of good friends of ours,  passed away at the age of 16.  Jordan Hoak was a very special person.  Below are two excerpts from essays she had recently written that have powerful messages.  God bless you Jordan and may the good Lord shower you and your family with his blessings.

Excerpted from a Reflection Essay, Written by Jordan Angelina Hoak, 9/6/13:

I believe everyone is connected in some way.  I believe when one does good for another, the kindness of that act will travel, continuing to spread.  I came to these beliefs through my mom.  She taught me that smiles are contagious.  Even though I do many service projects which help supply an individual with basic needs, I also believe that respect is just as needed.”

“In their eyes, you can see the respect they felt.”

“My goal in life is to be the best person I can possibly be.  I want to leave the world a better place then when I entered it.  I believe this can be possible by keeping a positive attitude.”

Excerpted from “The Goodness Within”; Written by Jordan Angelina Hoak, 9/17/13.

“Life is painful for people all over the world.  By smiling and showing you care for the person, you can help make their day.  I believe this to be a fact, one simple conversation full of respect and caring words can lift a person up and change their outlook for the day.  Everyone is connected in some way.  Investing yourself in someone else can be taxing and tiresome,  but it pays off.”

If everyone is kind and smiles, the smiles will spread and the world overall will become a happier place.”
