Handout #145: The Chemistry of a Great Team

THE CHEMISTRY OF A GREAT ITEM

  1. Must be worked at – nothing for granted
  2. All seasons are different – none the same
  3. Founded on respect

COMMITMENT IS THE THING. SOLDIERS IN THE RANKS HAVE RARELY, OVER THE AGES, FOUGHT FOR KING, COUNTRY, FREEDOM OR MORAL PRINCIPLE.

MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, MEN HAVE FOUGHT AND WINNERS HAVE WON BECAUSE OF A COMMITMENT – TO A LEADER – AND TO A SMALL BROTHERHOOD WHERE THE TIES THAT BIND ARE MUTUAL RESPECT AND CONFIDENCE – SHARED PRIVATION – SHARED HAZARD – SHARED TRIUMPH – A WILLINGNESS TO OBEY AND DETERMINATION TO FOLLOW.

“And then in one of those great thundering jolts in which a man’s real motives are revealed to him in an electrifying vision, I understand, at last, why I jumped hospital that Sunday 35 years ago and, in violation of orders, returned to the front and almost certain death.

It was an act of love. Those men on the line were my family, my home. They were closer to me than I can say, closer than any friends had been or ever would be. They had never let me down, and I couldn’t do it to them. I had to be with them, rather than let them die and live with the knowledge that I might have saved them. Men, I now know, do not fight for flag or country, for the Marine Crops or glory or any other abstraction. They fight for one another.

Any man in combat who lacks comrades who will die for him, or for whom he is willing to die, is not a man at all. He is truly damned.”

SUMARAI PRINCIPLES

Handout #144: Press On

Press On

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.  Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

Handout #143: Football Huddle Prayer; Miracle; Fishing; Gifts; True Joy . . .

FOOTBALL HUDDLE PRAYER …

Take us ever mindful, Father, that

Athletics make men strong

Study makes men wise, and

Character makes men great.

Help us to be concerned about our relationship to You, as we are about this game we are about to play. Amen.

MIRACLE …

Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men.

Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for power equal to your tasks.

Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be a miracle.

FISHING …

To go fishing is the chance to wash one’s soul with pure air, with the rush of the brook, or with the shimmer of the sun on blue water.

It brings meekness and inspiration from the decency of nature, charity toward trouble-makers, patience toward fish, a mockery of profits and egos, a quieting of hate, a rejoicing that you do not have to decide a darned thing until next week. And it is discipline in the equality of men – for all men are equal before fish. – Herbert Hoover

GIFTS …

Not what we give, but what we share,

For the gift without the giver is bare;

Who gives of himself with his alms feeds three, –

Himself, his hungering neighbor, and Me. – James Russell Lowell

TRUE JOY…

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. – George Bernard Shaw

HERITAGE …

Let us not forget the religious character of our origin. Our fathers were brought here by their high veneration for the Christian religion. They journeyed by its light, and labored in its hope. They sought to incorporate its principles with the elements of their society, and the diffuse its influence through all their institutions – civil, political and literary.

Let us cherish these sentiments, and extend this influence still more widely, in the full conviction that this is the happiest society, which partakes in the highest degree of the mild and peaceable spirit of Christianity. – Daniel Webster

TRUE LOVE …

He who would have beautiful roses in his garden must have beautiful roses in his heart. He must love them well and always. He must have not only glowing admiration, the enthusiasm, and the passion, but the tenderness, the thoughtfulness, the reverence, the watchfulness of love. – George Eliot

CRITICISM …

How seldom we weigh our neighbor in the same balance with our selves. – Brother Juniper

Handout #142: Play Your Hunch; How to bring up a Subordinate

PLAY YOUR HUNCH

(These ideas appeared in an article by John E. Gibson in “Success Unlimited.”)

There are two kinds of thinkinganalytical and intuitive. Analytical or logical thinking proceeds a step at a time. Intuitive thinking is a mental shortcut.

The intuitive thinker arrives at an answer with little if any awareness of the process. Unfortunately, the intuitive thinker cannot turn this gift of or on at will. It “happens” to him and he can sense when it is in operation, but he can do little to control it. Neither are conclusions reached by intuitive thinking always the right ones. But logical thinking often arrives at wrong answers.

Extensive tests of college students show not only that the intui-process exists, but that those people who have it share common personality traits. They tend to be, according to researchers, exceptionally alert, quick, confident, foresighted, informal, spontaneous, independent, interested in the arts and in sweeping, abstract questions of philosophy and aesthetics. They like to take risks, they enjoy challenge, tend to commit themselves to causes and are usually unconventional.

Do you have the gift of intuition? The best way to tell is simply to keep a record of how often your hunches turn out to be correct. If you have a high average, you can probably improve it. If your average is low, better resign yourself to reasoning things out by logic.

HOW TO BRING UP A SUBORDINATE

Encourage Responsibility – You cannot grow unless you encourage others to grow. Don’t be afraid to delegate. Give subordinates as much responsibility as they can handle.

Encourage Growth – A future manager or “boss” needs as much experience as he can get. How he handles the opportunities you give him shows you his potential for growth.

Encourage Expression – One of your jobs is stimulation of independent thinking. You learn from his fresh outlook; he learns from your experience.

Encourage Recognition – Praise for a well done job deserves to be put on paper. A verbal pat on the back is good – a written memo is better.

Encourage Communication – Full dissemination of information is vital. Let everyone see what’s new, what’s different, what’s going to change.

Encourage Evaluation – It lets the younger manager or assistant know where he stands – and why – and it gives him a chance to discuss puzzling or sensitive issues.

Encourage Positives – An aura of positive expectancy – “I know you can do it” – makes a man more inclined to be a doer, not a hesitator.

“The spirit, the will to win and the will to excel … these are the things that endure.” – Vincent T. Lombardi
