Handout #137: Basic Principles about the Nature of Human Beings

BASIC PRINCIPLES ABOUT THE NATURE OF HUMAN BEINGS

That all individuals have personal strengths, assets and abilities that are presently unidentified and unused.

That all individuals, no matter what their present situation, have goals and objectives which are personally meaningful to them.

That all individuals, within themselves, have the desire to change and to grow.

That given a creative opportunity to design their own growth situation (learning experience) they will do so with enthusiasm.

That a group is usually necessary to encourage and to reinforce exploration and constructive change.

That it is unnecessary, and in many situations inappropriate, to explore the negative past in order to alter the present and to direct the future.

That emotions sometimes respond to verbal signs and symbols. But, almost always, they respond to action.

That physical, external environment is a critical factor in the process of human behavior.

That meaningful education (behavior change) is a continuous process. It is, by and large, predicted on need and desire, and not on order.

That peers learn best from peers when there is any additional information available in that relationship.

That in order to be successful, one has to associate with other successful people.

That successful people who continue to grow and change, do so by letting go of activities they enjoy and want to continue.

That a person has within himself the ability to establish a meaningful position in a balanced system … and it is not necessary to provide constant external guidance for the selection.

That learning encompasses the ability to recognize and do something about the difference between our present failures and other’s past successes.

Handout #136: Your Name

Your Name

You got it from your Father, “Twas the best he had to give.”

And right gladly he bestowed it, it’s yours, the while you live.

You may lose the watch he gave you – and another you may claim,

But remember, when you’re tempted, to be careful of his name.

It was fair the day you got it, and a worthy name to bear,

When he took it from his father, there was no dishonor there.

Through the years he proudly wore it, to his father he was true,

And that name was clean and spotless when he passed it on to you.

Oh, there is much that he has given that he values not at all.

He has watched you break your playthings in the days that you were small.

You have lost the knife he gave you and you’ve scattered many a game,

But you’ll never hurt your father if you’re careful with his name.

It is your to wear forever, yours to wear the while you live.

Yours perhaps, some distant morning; to another boy to give.

And you’ll smile as did your father – with a smile that all can share . . .

If a clean name and a good name you are giving him to wear.

Handout #135: Th’ Ol’ Man; Criticisms; A Knights Prayer

TH’ OL’ MAN …..

He never ranted and raved when we fumbled the ball or lost a race; Just took it kinda quiet like. Always looked the same kind of poker face.

He wasn’t so old I guess, but wise; always seemed to have a plan to get us kids out of a slump. Guess that’s why we call him “Th’ Ol’ Man.”

He never talked much or bragged. Came out to practice in old baggy Clothes.  He’d just stand around and say, “Chuck, stretch out – run more on your toes,”

Or, “Bob”, play nerer the end,” kinda indifferent.  At first we’d just go ahead like we were; but before long, we were doing like Th’ Ol man said.

He felt more inside than he showed, had lines on his face, and hair getting gray – Like he worried about us – But you’d never know from anything he’d say.

Voice kinda gruff when we’d win an’ his face’d get all red under th’ tan; “Not bad,” he’d say, an’ we knew that was high praise from Th’ Ol. Man.

And then sometimes we’d lose but he didn’t bawl us out or tear his hair; Just tightened his jaw a bit, even joked a little, so we’d think he didn’t care;

But all next week we remembered an’ were out-there when each practice began; Ready to break a leg or bust a heart to win for Th’ Ol’ Man.

Didn’t think much about it then, but after years of turmoil, bluster and noise –

There was a class reunion and thoughts were traded ‘mong the boys.

We’ve widely divergent paths, but we started with a common spoken plan; Each resolved, in the game of life, To Make Good – For Th’ Ol’ Man.

CRITICISMS

We are not hen’s eggs, or bananas, or clothespins, to be counted off by the dozen. Down to the last detail, we are all different.  Everyone has his own fingerprints.  Recognize and rejoice in that endless variety.

The white light of the divine purpose streams down from heaven to be broken up by these human prisms into all the colors of the rainbow. Take your own color in the pattern and be just that.

NATURE – is the living, visible garment of God.

************************************

A KNIGHTS PRAYER –

My Lord, I am ready on the threshold of this new day to go forth armed with thy prayer, seeking adventure on the high road, to right wrong, to overcome evil, to suffer wounds and endure pain if need be but in all things to serve thee bravely, faithfully, joyfully, that at the end of the day’s labor, kneeling for thy blessing, thou mayest find no blot upon my shield. – Chester Cathedral

PEACE – all men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quiet in a room alone.

Handout #134: Success; Dedication-Sacrifice-Desire

SUCCESS …

SUCCESS consists of doing the common things uncommonly well.

NEVER – NEVER – NEVER GIVE UP.

– Winston Churchill

DEDICATION – SACRIFICE – DESIRE

There are three kinds of people in the world

The wills, the wants, and the can’ts

The first accomplish everything:

The second oppose everything;

The third fail in everything.

******************************************

QUOTES TO LIVE BY …

The fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, AND Self-Control.

Do the very best you can and leave the outcome to God.

God will look us over not for medals or diplomas, or degrees: BUT FOR SCARS.

The most valuable gift you can give another is a good example.

When God measures an athlete – he puts a tape around his Heart not his waist.

Have Faith in God – work harder than anyone else – and – Be Enthusiastic.

There are no great men in this world, only great challenges which ordinary men rise to meet.

******************************************

MAKING GOOD!

Fire your gun, then get ready to fire again – instead of talking about the first shot.

There is a big difference between wanting to and willing to.

Love your enemies; it will drive them crazy.

Counting time is not so important as making time count.

The word American – ends in – I CAN!

THE CALL OF THE WILD

You’re sick of the game, why, that’s a shame; you’re young, you’re brave and you’re bright. You have had a raw deal, I know, but don’t squeal, buck up! Do your darndest and flight!  It’s the plugging away that will win you the day.  So don’t be a piker ole pard; just call on your gift, it’s so easy to quit. It’s keeping on living that’s hard.

It’s easy to cry that you’re beaten, and die. It’s easy to crawfish and crawl, but to fight and to fight when hopes out of slight, why, that’s the best game of them all. And although you come out of each grueling bout all broken and beaten and scarred, just give one more try:  It’s so easy to die.  It’s keeping your chin up that’s hard. – Robert Service
