Handout #114: Thoughts to Live By

THOUGHTS TO LIVE BY ….

ACTION:  Beautiful thoughts hardly bring us to God … until they are acted upon. No one can have a true idea of right until he does it.

MANHOOD:  One cannot always be a hero, but one can always be a man.

PRAYER:  If you pray you will certainly be saved; if you do not pray you will be lost.

COURAGE:  The test of our Christian courage comes when we are faced with one of the many rugged goal-line stands forged by the devil.  The will to do, the tenacity to overcome all obstacles and finish the course is rooted in courage. It is the outward manifestation of our spiritual development.

CRITICISM:  He has the right to criticize who has the heart to help. Lincoln

COMPASSION:  Forget yourself for others, and others will never forget you.

ACHIEVEMENT:  Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which is has overcome while trying to succeed.

LIVING:  God gives every bird its food, but He doesn’t throw it in the nest; so let’s get scratching.

SUCCESS:  Success is neither fame, wealth, nor power.  Success is seeking, knowing and obeying God.

COMPETITION:  Always dream and shoot higher than you can reach. Don’t bother just to be better than your contemporaries, try to be better than yourself.

DEDICATION:  Doing a job nearly right and doing it exactly right is usually the difference between success and failure.

EFFECIENCY:  The right man in the right place at the right time – doing the right thing in the right way.

FAITH:  God never puts any man in a place too small to grow in.

GOOD HABIT:  At the end of each day, ask yourself – “Have I given it all I’ve got today?” If the answer is “Yes”, then it doesn’t matter what anyone else says.  You’re on your way – there’s no limit to what you’ll eventually accomplish.

HAPPINESS:  If you are being made unhappy by unpleasant memories, you can cleanse your mind, not by conscious effort to forget, but by seeking other ideas as substitutes. You are wise in not seeking to escape something evil (from something evil) but in rushing to something good.

ATTITUDE:  It seems to me that when our convictions are strongest, things seem to go our way the best.

HOPE:  Other men see only a hopeless end, but the Christian rejoices in an endless hope.

FRIENDSHIP:  A friend is somebody who knows all about you, but likes you anyway.

Handout #113: Prayers Can’t be Answered . . . Unless They Are Prayed

Merry Christmas to everyone!!  May the good Lord shower you with his blessings this Holiday season and throughout the New Year!

PRAYERS CAN’T BE ANSWERED UNLESS THEY ARE PRAYED!

Life without a purpose is barren indeed –

There can’t be a harvest unless you plant seed,

There can’t be attainment unless there’s a goal,

And man’s but a robot unless there’s a soul.

If we send no ships out, no ships will come in,

And unless there’s a contest, nobody can win.

For games can’t be won unless they are played,

And PRAYERS can’t be answered unless they are PRAYED.

So whatever is wrong with your life today,

You’ll find a solution if you kneel down and pray –

Not just for pleasure, enjoyment and health,

Not just for honors and prestige and wealth.

But PRAY for a purpose to make life worth living.

And PRAY for the Joy of unselfish giving,

For GREAT IS YOUR GLADNESS and RICH YOUR REWARD

When you make your LIFE’S PURPOSE the CHOICE of the LORD.

– Helen Steiner Rice

  • PRAYERS should be the key of the day and the lock of the night.
  • If you would lift me you must be on higher ground.
  • There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them.
  • What we are is God’s gift to us. What we become is our gift to God.
  • LIFE is a mirror: if you frown at it, it frowns back; if you smile, it returns the greeting.

Handout #112: Little Children; Let Daily Prayers Dissolve Your Cares

I was somewhat at a loss of what Handout to post this week, then while flipping through a binder my Grandpa made for me, I came by this Handout and it seems like he wrote it just for this week.

LITTLE CHILDREN

When god calls little children to dwell with him above,

We mortals often question the wisdom of his love.

For no heartache compares with the death of one small child,

Who does so much to make this world seem wonderful and mild.

Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to his fold,

And so picks a rosebud before it can grow old.

God knows how much we need them and so he takes but few,

To make the land of heaven more beautiful to view.

Believing this is difficult but somehow we must try,

The saddest word that mankind knows will always be “goodbye”.

And so when little ones depart we who are left behind,

Must realize how much god loves little children for angels are hard to find.

– Unknown

********************************

LET DAILY PRAYERS DISSOLVE YOUR CARES

We all have cares and problems we cannot solve alone

But if we go to God in prayer we are never on “our own” …

And if we try to stand alone, we are weak and we will fall,

For god is always Greatest when we’re helpless, lost and small.

And no day is unmeetable if on rising our first thought

Is to thank God for the blessings that His loving care has brought …

For there can be no failures or hopeless, unsaved sinners

If we enlist the help of God who makes all losers winners …

So meet him in the morning and go with Him through the day

And thank Him for his guidance each evening when you pray.

And if you follow faithfully this daily way to pray

You will never in your lifetime face another “hopeless day.”

For like a soaring eagle you too can rise above the “storms of life” around you on the wings of prayer and love. – Helen Steiner Rice

BRAIN FOOD FOR ATHLETES (2)

  • You can soon determine the caliber of a man by ascertaining the amount of opposition it takes to discourage him.
  • If a break goes against you, turn on your “extra effort”.
  • It is defeat that turns bone to flint, it is defeat that turns muscle to gristle, it is defeat that makes men invincible.
  • Monuments! What are they? The very pyramids have forgotten their builders, or to whom they were dedicated. DEEDS, not stones, are the true monuments of the great.
  • It is not so much what we know as how well we use what we know.
  • Keep on your toes and you won’t get caught flat-footed.
  • A fellow teammate may be faster than you. He may have more skill, better physical qualities; but he should not be your superior in team spirit, fight, determination, ambition and character.
  • The cheers of athletic contests soon pass away, but sincere friendships live forever.
  • It is very easy to be ordinary, but it takes courage to excel, and we must excel.
  • It is so easy for all of us to more or less justify our own inefficiencies by criticizing others.
  • A little of impatience spoils great plans. Haste makes waste.
  • It’s hard to get ahead if one spends all of one’s time getting even.
  • There are no miracles to men who do not believe in them.
  • An athlete will not get far who isn’t honest with himself.
  • A job poorly done stands as a witness against the man who did it.

*****************************************

HIT IT HARD … The temper of life is to be made good by big, honest blows; stop striking and you will accomplish nothing; strike feebly, and you will do almost as little. SUCCESS rides on every hour – grapple it, and you may win; but without a grapple it will never go with you. WORK is the weapon of honor, and who lacks the weapon will never triumph.

*****************************************

WHAT MAKES A CHAMPION?

The thing that makes a champion is obvious enough:

It isn’t any mystic prestidigitator’s stuff.

It’s nothing more than giving to whatever be the chore,

The power that is in you – and a small scintilla more.

It isn’t nay wizardy, it’s not a magic gift;

It’s merely lifting honestly the load you have to lift;

Or, in the game you’re playing, it is using all you store

Or grit and nerve and energy – and a trifle more.

The thing that makes a champion is simple, plain and clear;

It’s never being “almost”, “just about”, or “pretty near”,

It’s summoning the utmost from your spirit’s inner core

And giving every bit of it – and just a little more.

“That little more-how much it is”.

As deep and wide and far

As that enormous emptiness from molehill to a star,

The gulf between the earthbound and the eagles as they soar,

The champions who give their best – and one iota more.

— Father Eumacj, Coach St. Stephens Mission

PLATO … A boy or girl are not prepared for the higher reaches of mathematical inquiry or philosophical inquiry or philosophical speculation until they are first toughened in the spirit by athletics.
