Handout #93: Effective Player-Coach Relationships

Effective Player-Coach Relationships

1.  First and Foremost, you must have a genuine concern for and interest in young people.

2.  Plan and Prepare Well.  Take the time to explain the “why” behind what you are doing. DON’T always expect today’s youth to blindly follow every policy.  They must be sold on you and your program.

3.  Be Well-organized and Systematic. Develop the characteristics and techniques which would enable you to more effectively carry out your plans.

4.  Develop An Enthusiastic Attitude. How can you expect your players to be enthusiastic if you aren’t.

5.  Have A Sense of Humor. Believe me, with the problems and pressures of today’s job of coaching, you have to maintain a good sense of humor.

6.  Discipline. Don’t expect your players to be well-disciplined if you yourself do not exhibit these qualities.

7.  Do Not Be “Over-Bearing.” Be a leader and maintain your status through positive firmness when necessary, but never through excessive threatening.

8.  Avoid Establishing Too Many Rules. If a rule is made, it must be carried out.

9.  Be Sensitive to the needs of your players, particularly assistance with personal problems.

10.  Know Your Players. This would include family life and finances, temperament, and other pertinent characteristics.

11.  Keep In Mind that it is much easier to be strict in the beginning and more tolerant later as the situation distates rather than the reverse.

12.  Strive To Develop within your players a sense of worth, purpose and direction. Personal and team goals help make the hard work and sacrifice more meaningful.

NOW – substitute Management, Boss, Employer for the Coach and worker for the player. Is There a Difference???

***********************************

MEETING LIFE’S PROBLEMSTwo monks were required to be penance for an infraction of monastic rules. Wearied from labors in the field the preceding day, they failed to rise promptly for morning prayer. For this impiety, the abbot ordered them to walk all that day with peas in their shoes. One monk limped and moaned with every step, but the other walked with ease, and sang snatches of gay songs.

The sufferer said to his fellow penitent, “Brother, how can you endure the agony of walking on hard, dry peas?”

With a smile the other replied: “I boiled my peas.”

**********************************

A PRAYER … May God give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change – The courage to change the things I can – and the wisdom to know the difference.

SUCCESS… A successful person is one who went ahead and did the thing the rest of us never quite got around to.

Handout #91: The Man To Be

THE MAN TO BE …

Some day the world will need a man of courage in a time of doubt.

And somewhere, as a little boy, that future hero plays about.

Within some humble home, no doubt, that instrument of greater things

Now climbs upon his father’s knee or to his mother’s garments clings.

And when shall come that call for him to render service that is fine,

He then shall do God’s mission here may be your little boy or mine.

Some day the world will need a man! I stand beside his cot at night

And wonder if I’m teaching him, as best I can, to know the right.

I am the father of a boy — his life is mine to make or mar —

And he no better can become that what my daily teachings are;

There will be a need for someone great — I dare not falter from the line —

The man that is to serve the world may be that little boy of mine.

Perhaps your boy and mine may not ascend the lofty heights of fame;

The orders for their births are hid.  We know not why to earth they came.

Yet in some little bed tonight the great man of tomorrow sleeps

And only He who sent him here, the secret of his purpose keeps.

As fathers then our care is this — to keep in mind the great design

The man the world shall need someday may be your little boy or mine.

– Edgar Guest

SKULL SESSION THOUGHTS …

  • You will be a better MAN for having played sports as a boy.
  • If you are content with the best you have done, you will never do the best you can do.
  • Remember: People who tell you a thing can’t be done are almost always authorities on failure.
  • By proper effort you can make the future anything YOU want it to be.
  • Nothing astonishes one as much as Common Sense and Plain Dealing.
  • He only is exempt from failures who makes no effort.
  • INFLUENCE:  The length and breadth of our influence upon others depends upon the depth of our concern for others.
  • We are not what we think we are, but what we think – WE ARE.
  • COURAGE – the will to do, the tenacity to overcome all obstacles and finish the course, is rooted in courage. It is the outward manifestation of our spiritual development.  – J. Edgar Hoover
  • These thoughts I would leave you: Be truthful in each thing you do; sacrifice; dispel self-love. Be Thankful to your God above. Consider neighbor with love and smile. Be Appreciative all the while; respect the truth of the power of God, and He will guide each step you trod. This sermonette I bring to you: May it serve you well the whole life through. – Unknown
  • Depend on one fact: the future of mankind, peace, progress and prosperity must finally be determined by the extent to which men can be brought to a state of common and honest understanding.
  • To live long it is necessary to live slowly. – Cicero
  • If you wish to be positive, which means youthful, never speak of the past any more than you can help.
  • You’ll find as you grow older that you weren’t born such a very great while ago.
