Handout #85: A New Start; The Best Memory System; Miracle

A NEW START ….

I will start a new this morning with a higher, fairer creed,

I will cease to stand complaining of my ruthless neighbor’s creed;

I will cease to sit repining while my duty’s call is clear;

I will waste no moment whining, and my heart shall know no fear.

I will look sometimes about me for the things that merit praise;

I will search for hidden beauties that elude the grumbler’s gaze.

I will try to find contentment in the paths that I must tread;

I will cease to have resentment when another moves ahead.

I will not be swayed by envy when my rival’s strength is shown;

I will not deny his merit, but I’ll strive to prove my own.

I will try to see the beauty spread before me, rain or shine;

I will cease to preach your duty, and be more concerned with mine.

 Now Then – How about YOU?

****************************************

THE BEST MEMORY SYSTEM

FORGET each kindness that you do as soon as you have done it.

FORGET the praise that falls on you the moment you have won it.

FORGET the slander that you hear before you can repeat it.

FORGET each slight, each spite, each sneer, wherever you meet it.

REMEMBER every kindness done to you, whatever its measure.

REMEMBER praise by others won and pass it on with pleasure.

REMEMBER every promise made and keep it to the letter.

REMEMBER those who lend you aid and be a grateful debtor.

REMEMBER ALL THE HAPPINESS THAT COMES YOUR WAY IN LIVING.

FORGET each worry and distress, be hopeful and forgiving.

REMEMBER Good, remember Truth, remember Heaven is above you,

AND YOU WILL FIND, through age and youth, THAT MANY HEARTS WILL LOVE YOU.

*****************************************

MIRACLEDo not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be a miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself, at the richness of life which has come to you by the grace of GOD.

Handout #84: Virtues

VIRTURES

Virtues do not grow automatically from sport participation.

The team may endorse lying, cheating, and thuggery, or it may endorse the opposite.

It depends upon leadership – leadership of an adult order of tradition – leadership which intentionally and directly transmits a culture of courage, loyalty, or bravery or fine manners, sportsmanship, honesty, and courtesy … These must be sought and taught.

***************************************

COMPETITION …

Is a driving force that has much to commend it but it can be a force for evil unless it is guided by mature leaders who enlist the imagination of the youth and adults of our country.

*******************************************

THE ULTIMATE GOAL …

As the new clock said in talking to the old grandfather clock: “Sixty ticks per minute. Three hundred sixty ticks per hour.

Eight thousand six hundred and forty ticks per day. And 3,153,600 ticks per year. Gosh! How can I do it?” “Well,” said the old clock, “just do it one tick at a time!”

Morale:  Don’t fuss about trifles – the daily irritations and frustrations.  Keep your eyes on the ultimate goal – the Big Victory.  One tick at a time.

*********************************

QUOTES …

Chinese Proverb – Talk does not cook rice.

Paul Dietzel – Why Football Coaching?  Because it is rewardingRefreshingandGreat Fun.

**************************************

CRITERIA PRO FOOTBALL

1.      CHARACTER

2.      ATHLETIC ABILITY

3.      INTELLIGENCE

4.      STRENGTH

5.      COMPETITIVENESS

YOUNG MAN – How Do You Measure Up??

************************************************

PROTECT GAME OF FOOTBALL

“Keep football a tough sport that teaches young men to think, to dare to hit hard, to lead, to sacrifice, to fight, to win and to disdain the tie or the defeat.

School football is the greatest game a young man plays. Protect it well.

Keep it a tough sport and as a teacher of men.

Dare to hit hard, to lead, to sacrifice, to fight, to win, to disdain the tie or the defeat.

School football is the greatest game young men play.

Gentlemen … Protect It Well

—  Dan Jessee to the National Football Coaches Association

********************************************

A REALMAN…

Not, How did he die, but, How did he live?

Not, What did he gain, but, What did he give?

Not, what was his station, but, Had he a heart?

And, how did he play his God-given part?

These are the units to measure the worth of a man, As A Man, regardless of birth.

Handout #83: Tributes to Mother

TRIBUTES TO MOTHERS

THANK YOU, MOTHER

For the thousands of feedings and thousands of cleanings and thousands of clothings and thousands of soothing and thousands of cradlings;

And for at least a thousand-thousand other things that showed you cared, “THANK-YOU, MOM.”

And especially for encouraging me to consider God, “Thank-You, Mother.”

(3 meals x 365 days x 18 years equals 19,710 meals)

****************************************

TO BE EDUCATED

To be educated means to treat people well, and you are certainly well educated.

If it is true that living is learning, then you shall always be a generation ahead of me in knowledge.

As I grow older I become more and more aware of how much you really know.

This is not because you have learned to see more clearly, but rather that I, have grown less blind.

****************************************

WHO ELSE? MY MOTHER!

Have you gazed upon your child and felt newborn as I do when I look at your grandchildren?

Have you, at times, been so intent as to lose your existence in that of another, your child?

Who, first saw, the faint glimmerings of all that I might be? Who else? My Mother!

**********************************

MY MOTHER

My mother, like your mother, is worthy of admiration and emulation for many, many reasons.  But for me, one stands out high above all the others.

She is My Mother.

Your laughter and sense of humor have enriched my life.

Many times you told us tales of things you did and shared the humor in your life with those around you.

I, was one of those and having watched you laugh at yourself, I have learned not to take myself quite so ’seriously.

It has been a great blessing, this learning to laugh at me.

Thank you, for this great tool to appreciate and depreciate self.

Thank you, too, for continuing to teach us, humor.  It helps me as I tread this unsteady world.

***********************************

NATURE, OUR MUTUAL MOTHER

Though one day you shall join the silent and serene, your heart through us, the living, shall speak still.

Your passing shall help teach us, the breathing, to accept the finality of the last breath.

Nature, our mutual Mother, shall return thee to that which thou wast. Verily, she shall cradle everlastingly.

Perhaps, along with all of us, the earth too, shall attempt to stifle a cry for having been made more sacred because thou art in it.

Handout #82: Kinds of People

KINDS OF PEOPLE …

First, there are the cop-outs.  These people set no goals and make no decision.

Second, there are the hold-outs.  They have a beautiful dream, but they’re afraid to respond to its challenge because they aren’t sure they can make it.  These people have lost all childlike faith.

Third, there are the drop-outs.  They start to make their dream come true.  They know their role. They set their goals, but when they going gets tough.  They quit.  They don’t pay the toll.

Finally, there are the all-outs.  They are the people who know their role.  They want and need and are going to be stars: star students, star parents, star-waitresses.  They want to shine out as an inspiration to others.  They set their goals.  They ask, “How can I live the one life I have and make it something beautiful for God?”  Their goals are god-inspired, a team effort.  The all-outs never quit.  They keep on keeping on, even when the toll gets heavy.  They’re dedicated.  They’re committed.

– Robert H. Schuller

  • Not in the glamour of the crowded street, not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng – BUT within ourselves are VICTORY and DEFEAT.
  • Of all life has to offer, Of all that’s great and true, that which means the most to me is being FRIENDS WITH YOU.
  • EDUCATION might not make you a leader, but it should teach you which leader to follow.

********************************************

LOVE THYSELF!

I am neither GOOD nor BAD, I AM BOTH.

I am neither honest nor dishonest, I AM BOTH.

I am neither generous of selfish, I AM BOTH.

BUT GOD accepts me, and forgives me, and Loves me, and I now accept, forgive, and LOVE MYSELF.

****************************************

ANGER is only one letter short of danger.

****************************************

DUTY …

Is a very personal thing.  It is what comes from knowing the need to take action AND not just a need to urge others to do something.

A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of LIFE.  – Charles Darwin

No trial would trouble you if you knew GOD’s purpose in sending it.

*******************************************

NAPOLEON once observed, “Armys effectiveness depends on its Size, Training, Experience and Morale … AND Morale is worth more than all the other factors combined.”

The trouble with the world is not that people know too little, but that they know so many things that ain’t so. – MARK TWAIN
