Handout #81: If For Boys . . .; When Things Go Wrong

A quick note before this week’s Handout:  I had the fortune of hearing some wonderful presentations this week at a work function.  One of the presenters said something that stuck in my mind, and I have heard these words repeated many times in my head since I first heard them on Wednesday.  What he said was so simple, yet so profoud and often overlooked.  He said:  “You know how a child spells love, T I M E.”  So for all the parents and grandparents out there that have children and grandchildren, remeber that there is no better gift that you can give your child or grandchild than your TIME.  Put all your other priorities aside and spend more TIME with your child or grandchild!!  Now, to this week’s Handout …

IF FOR BOYS …

If you can take the knowledge you have gathered through years of study, work and school and turn it into living acts of kindness through a life that keeps the golden rule …

If you can give a little more than other fellows and keep on trying though you’re tired, yet make not public all your efforts nor hold of account to be admired …

If you can keep on working toward the future holding fast to all your secret goals though time and circumstance may slow you and even strew your path with burning coals…

If you to win a war, must lose a battle then lose it, but let no one see you cry let sympathy be saved for those who need it not for those who have the will to try …

If you can keep your trust in all things holy remembering, too, that high above the power which made man still directs him with infinite patience and with everlasting love…

If you can dream and plan and struggle and keep on when lesser men give in – you will have earned the noble art of manhood and what’s more, my son, you’re bound to win!

****************************************

WHEN THINGS GO WRONG …

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, when the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, when the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile but you have to sigh, when care is pressing you down a bit – rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. And many a fellow turns about when he might have won had he stuck it out.  Don’t give up though the pace seems slow – you may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor’s cup; and he learned too late when the night came down, how close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out – the silver tint of the clouds of doubt, and when you never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems afar; so stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit – it’s when things seem worst, you mustn’t quit.

“No Horse gets anywhere till he is harnessed.”

“No Stream ever drives anything until it is confined.”

“No Life ever grows until it is focused, dedicated, and disciplined.”

“He won’t be denied who will find a way.”

“A fault recognized is half corrected.”

Handout #80: MYSELF; If For Girls

MYSELF . . .

I have to live with myself, and so

I want to be fit for myself to know

I want to be able, as days go by,

Always to look myself straight in the eye;

I don’t want to stand, with the setting sun,

And hate myself for things I have done.

I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf

A lot of secrets about myself,

And fool myself, as I come and go,

Into thinking that nobody else will know

The kind of a man I really am;

I don’t want to dress up myself in sham.

I want to go out with my head erect,

I want to deserve all men’s respect;

But here in the struggle for fame and pelf

I want to be able to like myself.

I don’t want to look at myself and know

That I’m bluster and bluff an empty show.

I can never hide myself from me;

I see what others may never see;

I know what others may never know,

I never can fool myself, and so,

Whatever happens, I want to be

Self-respecting and conscience free.

IF FOR GIRLS …

IF YOU CAN TRUST YOURSELF THOUGH OTHERS DOUBT YOU

AND CONQUER FEARS THAT LIMIT WHAT YOU DARE

SO YOU CAN FREELY GIVE TO THOSE ABOUT YOU

THE SKILLS AND TALENTS THAT ARE YOURS TO SHARE:

 IF YOU CAN LIVE, NOT FOR YOUR PLEASURE ONLY,

BUT GLADLY LEND YOUR GENTLENESS AND GRACE

TO WARM THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHOSE LIVES ARE LONELY

AND HELP TO MAKE THEIR WORLD A BETTER PLACE…

IF YOU CAN BE COURAGEOUS WHEN DEFEATED AND HUMBLE IN THE FACE OF VICTORY, OR GIVE YOUR BEST UNTIL A TASK’S COMPLETED,

HOWEVER DIFFICULT THAT TASK MAY BE:

IF YOU CAN STRIVE, NOT CARING WHO GETS CREDIT,

AND WORK AT BUILDING BRIDGES AND NOT WALLS,

OR HEARING IDLE SLANDER, JUST FOR GET IT

AND NEVER FAIL TO HELP SOMEONE WHO FALLS:

IF YOU CAN TAKE RESOURCES THAT SURROUND YOU AND USE THEM IN THE WAY YOU FEEL YOU SHOULD,

YOU’LL BE A WOMAN … AND ALL THOSE AROUND YOU

WILL BE THE RICHER FOR YOUR WOMANHOOD!

Handout #79: Proud to be Square; To the Kid on the End of the Bench

BE PROUD TO BE A SQUARE

SQUARE! Something to be snickered over or outright laughed at. There used to be no higher compliment to pay a man than calling him a “squareshooter.”

But today, a square is a guy who volunteers when he doesn’t have to. He gets his kicks from trying to do a job better than anyone else. He gets so lost in his work, he has to be reminded to go home. He hasn’t learned to cut corners or goof off. This nut we call a square gets all choked up when he hears children singing “My country ‘Tis of Thee.” He even believes in God, and says so, in public.

A square is a guy who lives within his means, and thinks Uncle San should too. He’s likely to save some of his own money for a rainy day, rather than count on using yours. A square gets his books at the library instead of the drugstore. He tells he kids it’s more important to play fair than to win. Imagine!

A square wants to see America first in everything. He believes in honoring Mother and Father, “Do unto Others” and that kind of stuff.

If you fit this description stand up and be counted, you squares who turn the wheels, dig the fields, move the mountains, and put rivets in your dreams; you squares who dignify the human race; who hold the thankless world in place! A “square” never needs to look for a job or ask for a raise – he is in demand everywhere.

TO THE KID ON THE END OF BENCH

CHAMPIONS once sat where you’re sitting, Kid. The football Hall of fame (and every other Hall of Fame) is filled with names of people who sat, week after week, without getting a spot of mud on their well-laundered uniforms. Generals, senators, surgeons, prize-winning novelists, professors, business executives started on the end of the bench, too.

Don’t sit and study your shoe tops. Keep your eye on the game. Watch for defensive lapses. Look for offensive opportunities. If you don’t think you’re in a great spot, wait until you see how many would like to take it away from you at next spring practice. What you do from the bench this season could put you on the field next season, as a player, or back in the grandstand as a spectator.
