Handout #77: Pledge to Physical Fitness; A Creed for those who have Suffered

PLEDGE TO PHYSICAL FITNESS …

I PLEDGE to mount a frontal attack on the galloping obesity that surrounds me and threatens to encompass me.  Girth control is my goal, and I will mobilize all of my resources to achieve this, the most honorable objective.

I will exercise moderately every day and eat only the amount of food necessary to sustain body weight, to hold the line on that vast waistline, and to qualify for the “No Belly prize.” – Anonymous

******************************************

PHYSICAL FITNESSis a matter of PRIDE in one’s self.

MINDS are like parachutes: they function only when open.

DEFINITION:  A CONFERENCE is a group of confused people.  When they go home, they are still confused but on a higher level.

******************************************

A CREED FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED

I ASKED GOD FOR STRENGTH, THAT I MIGHT ACHIEVE.  I WAS MADE WEAK, THAT I MIGHT HUMBLY LEARN TO OBEY …

I ASKED FOR HEALTH, THAT I MIGHT DO GREATER THINGS.  I WAS GIVEN INFIRMITY, THAT I MIGHT DO BETTER THINGS;

I ASKED FOR RICHES, THAT I MIGHT BE HAPPY.  I WAS GIVEN POVERTY, THAT I MIGHT BE WISE …

I ASKED FOR POWER, THAT I MIGHT HAVE THE PRAISE OF MEN.  I WAS GIVEN WEAKNESS, THAT I MIGHT FEEL THE NEED OF GOD …

I ASKED FOR ALL THINS THAT I MIGHT ENJOY LIFEI WAS GIVEN LIFE, THAT I MIGHT ENJOY ALL THINGS …

I GOT NOTHING THAT I ASKED FOR – – BUT – – EVERYTHING THAT I HAD HOPED FOR – –

ALMOST DESPITE MYSELF, MY UNSPOKEN PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED, I AM AMONG ALL MEN, MOST RICHLY BLESSED.

LOSING-QUITTING

  • If you are made of the right stuff, a hard fall results in a high bounce.
  • There is no mistake so great as the mistake of not going on.
  • The minute you get the idea you’re indispensable – you’re not.
  • A second rate man can never make a first class athlete.
  • The reason some young men do not succeed is because their wishbone is where their backbone ought to be.
  • When you think you’re at the end of your rope tie a knot in it and hang on.

********************************************

BE HOPEFUL …

Be Hopeful, friend, when clouds are dark and days are gloomy, dreary,

Be hopeful even when the heart is sick and sad and weary.

Be hopeful when it seems you plans are all opposed and thwarted;

Go not upon life’s battlefield despondent and faint-hearted.

And, friends, be hopeful of yourself.  DO bygone follies haunt you?

Forget them and begin afresh.  And let no hindrance daunt you.

Though unimportant your career may seen as you begin it,

Press on, for victory’s ahead.  Be Hopeful, friend, and win it.

EDUCATION

Whom, then, do I call educated? … First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter day by day, who posses a judgment which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise, and rarely misses the expedient course of action; … Next, those who are decent and honorable in their intercourse with all men, bearing easily and good naturedly what is unpleasant or offensive in others, and being themselves as agreeable and reasonable as is humanly possible to be; … furthermore, those who hold their pleasures under control and are not unduly overcome by their misfortunes, bearing up under them bravely, and in a manner worthy of our common nature; … finally, and most important of all, those who are not spoiled by their successes, who do not desert their true selves, but hold their ground steadfastly as wise and sober-minded men, rejoicing no more in the good things which have come to them through chance than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs since birth. Those who have a character which is in accord, not with one of these things, but with all of them, these I maintain are educated and whole men, possessed of all the virtues of a man.

Socrates – 436-338 B.C.

********************************************

The person who has lost contact with God is no better than the man who denies him.

********************************************

GOD – NUMBER ONE …

We know how rough the road will be, how heavy here the load will be, we know about the barricades that wait along the track – but we have set our soul ahead upon a certain goal ahead and nothing left from hell to sky shall ever turn us back.

You tell me you’re a Christian and I say, “What else did you get for your birthday? Show Me!

Have faith in God – work harder than anyone else – Be enthusiastic.

What you are is God’s gift to you – what you make of yourself is your gift to God.

Handout #75: Cooperation; Success; Influence; What Do You Think . . .

COOPERATION …

In shooing flies or hauling freight ’tis wiser to cooperate:  For better work is sooner done when we take hold and work as one.

Now that’s the truth, all horses know; They learned centuries ago: When days are hot and flies are thick, Cooperation does the trick.

One tail on duty at the rear, can’t reach the flies behind the ear.  But two tails, if arranged with craft, give full protection fore and aft.

Now fools pursue the lonely course, But wise men emulate the horse: To make a burden half as great, so-use “Horse Sense” – Cooperate.

SUCCESS …

  • Son, you can do anything you think you can. It’s all in the way you view it. It’s all in the start you get, young man. You must feel you are going to do it.  – A rhyme sung by a Mother
  • The heights by great men reached and kept, were not attained by sudden flight.  But they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.  – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
  • Never – Never – Never – Never Give Up  – Winston Churchill
  • Who misses or who wins the prize – Go lose or conquer, as you can; But if you fail, or if you rise, Be each, pray God, a gentleman. – William Makepeace Thackeray
  • Words are leaves – deeds are fruit.
  • Your ship won’t come in till you row out to meet it.

INFLUENCE …

He is a Christian who tries to be the kind of neighbor Christ would be, and the kind of citizen Christ would be, and who asks himself in all the alternatives of his business life, and his social life, and his personal life, What would the Master do in this case?

The best Christian is he who most reminds the people with whom he lives of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He who never reminds anybody of the Lord Jesus Christ is not a Christian at all.  – George Hodges

LIFEBe it long or short, its completeness depends on what it was lived for.

WHAT DO YOU THINK …

  • Average” is as close to the bottom as to the top.
  • Reaching high keeps a young man on his toes.
  • A sharp tongue and a dull mind are usually found in the same head.
  • Footprints in the sands of time are never made by sitting down.
  • Always do right, this will gratify some people and astonish the rest. – Mark Twain
  • A self-motivated player makes commitments; ordinary players make promises.
  • The real secret of a successful athlete is the absolute confidence that he has in himself and in his abilities.
  • If you want to see a child at his very best in learning all the important things in life, watch him at play. – Plato
