Handout #65: Happiness is . . .

HAPPINESS IS …

Happiness is an agreeable condition of the soul arising from good luck . . . good fortune . . . or joyful satisfaction.   It is also a feeling arising from the consciousness of well being … or of enjoyment.

Happiness is the product of the thought.  It is contentment illuminated.  It is expression of the soul … impression of the heart … and enlightenment of feeling.  The quality of happiness is the brightness of the face.  Those who are happy bring happiness into the lives of others.

The supreme happiness of life is to know that we are loved … and those who reap enjoyment of this love have comfort, prosperity, and the fulfillment of the most cherished desire–contentment.

A happy person will give his best at all times, in all situations.  He will try to turn sorrow into joy.  You can rely on the truly happy when in need.

Happiness is often governed by health.  Ill health or a discontented state of mind are foes of happiness.

In some measure everyone is seeking happiness… but too many mistake pleasure and revelry as a means.  If we want happiness, it is to help others. Selfish people are never really happy.  Those who try to satisfy discontent or expect satisfaction when they trust their happiness in others are often disappointed.

If we have the desire to accept it, prosperity of mind … and social happiness are ours.

The world would be brighter and better if we were all happy and cheerful, not only for our own satisfaction, but for the happiness of others.

Keep a PromiseFind the time.  Forego a grudge.  Forgive an enemyListen.  Apologize if you were wrong.  Try to understand, Flout envy. Examine your demands on others.  Think first of someone else.   Appreciate, be kind, be gentle… Laugh a little more.

Deserve ConfidenceTake up arms against malice.  Decry complacency. E xpress your gratitude.  Gladden the heart of a child.  Take pleasure in the beauty and the wonder of the earth.

A HAPPY CHILD … When we are confused by the world – we can gain a renewed feeling of security from seeing the light in the eyes of a Happy, Trusting Child.

The only person who never makes a mistake is the person who never does anything.

FAITH – must begin with prayer – it must be nourished constantly.

A CHIP on the shoulder is too heavy a load for any person to carry.

We’re never so good or so bad as we imagine.

LIFE – I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.

Handout #63: A Test for Parents

A TEST FOR PARENTS

To help you determine whether you are being a pushy parent or one who gently encourages your children, ask yourself these questions completed by the Erikson Institute for Early Childhood Education:

  • Do your children have enough time by themselves, pursuing their own interests or just dong nothing?  Kids need privacy and time to daydream as well as time for activities and projects.
  • Do you take time to listen to each of your children individuallyChildren need time with their parents just to talk or just to be with them quietly.
  • Have you observed the activities in which your children are engaged?  Do they seem to be having a good time most of the time?  Children need to have time to learn to enjoy activities.
  • Is there someone in your family, or among your friends, teachers, etc. who can help you see your child more clearlyPatents sometimes have blind spots in regard to their children’s talent and competency.
  • Does your child seem excessively irritable, have trouble sleeping or complain of illnesses?  If so, it may be time for a physical checkup and a closer look at whether the child is over – or – under committed to activity.
  • Do your children have friends their own age that they like being withKids need peer relationships and should not be involved only in activities with adults.
  • Are you very uncomfortable if your child is not as good as other children in certain activities?  Remember that is your problem, not your child’s.
  • Do you model a well-balanced approach to achievement in your own life?  Are your ambitions well-balanced and does the way you give and receive in your relationship with others provide a proper model for your children?

NOW THENHOW DO YOUR MEASURE UP?

MAN’S LIFEThe life of man seems to me like the flight of a sparrow through the hall wherein you are sitting at supper in the winter time, a warm fire lighted on the hearth while storm rages without. The sparrow flies in at one door, tarries for a moment in the light and heat, and then flying forth through another door vanishes into the wintry darkness whence it had come. So tarries man for a brief space, but what went before or what is to follow, we know not.  THE VENERABLE BEDE

Handout #62: The Man in the Looking Glass; Leadership

THE MAN IN THE LOOKING GLASS

When you get what you want in your struggle for self

And the world makes you king for a day,

Just go to a mirror and look at yourself

And see what THAT man has to say.

For it isn’t your father, mother or wife

Whose judgement upon you must pass;

The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life,

Is the one staring back from the glass.

SOME people may think you a straight-shootin’ chum

And call you a wonderful guy,

But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum –

If you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest,

For he’s with you clear up to the end.

And you’ve passed the most dangerous, difficult test

If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life

And get pats on your back as you pass.

BUT your final reward will be heartaches and tears –

IF you’ve cheated the man in the glass!

LEADERSHIP

A careful man I want to be – A little fellow follows me,

I do not care to go astray For fear he’ll go the self same way.

I cannot once escape his eyes – Whatever he sees me do he tries.

Like me he says he’s gonna be – That little chap that follows me.

He thinks that I am good and fine – Believes in every word of mine.

The bad in me he must not see – My life to him must an example be.

I must remember as I go – Through summer sun and winter snow,

That I’m building for the years to be – For that little chap that follows me.

– unknown
