Handout #61: The Breaks

THE BREAKS

DON’T WAIT FOR THE BREAKSMAKE THEM!

Many times we hear players and fans blame a loss on the “Breaks” going against their team.  In most cases they are probably justified in their alibing of the reason for the defeat.

But, let us remember that the so-called “Breaks” in football usually go to the team which sets out to deliberately play for these breaks.

These are the mistakes in football which we commonly call “Breaks”:

  • Having a penalty against us.
  • Fumbling the ball.
  • Getting off a poor kick.
  • Missing an extra point.
  • Having a punt blocked.
  • Having a pass intercepted.
  • Having a long pass completed against us.
  • Having a long run against us.
  • Not scoring when inside the opponents ten yard line.
  • Getting off a poor center snap on a punt.

You will notice that in this list it is possible to force your opponent into making the errors listed from number two through nine.

We should strive constantly to avoid the above mistakes, and at the same time do all in our power to cause our opponents to be guilty of these same errors.

These are the so-called “Breaks”.  Anyone of them can win or loss a football game for a team in the matter of a few seconds. BUT DON’T FORGET! THESE BREAKS will usually go to the team which WORKS FOR THEM CONSTANTLY!

KEY TO VICTORY!

THE BIG PLAYThis is what makes the difference, the difference between victory and defeat. There are approximately 120 plays in a high school football game.  A study of game films shows that in games that are decided by two TD’s or less, three or four big plays made the difference between winning and losing (only three or four plays). The problem is that no one knows when the big play will come. It could come on the opening KO or one any of the succeeding plays through the final play of the game. The Key to Victory, then, is for a team to go all out – (100% team effort) – on every play to make the Big Play happen and not wait for it to happen. (LUCK HAPPENS WHEN PREPRATION MEETS OPPORTUNITY).

Handout #60: The Art of Thanksgiving

THE ART OF THANKS GIVING

The art of thanks giving is thanks living.  It is gratitude in action.  It is applying Albert Schweitzer’s philosophy: “In gratitude for your own good fortune you must render in return some sacrifice of your life for other life.”

It is thanking God for the gift of life by living it triumphantly.

It is thanking God for your talents and abilities by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good.

It is thanking God for all that men and women have done for you by doing things for others.

It is thanking God for opportunities by accepting them as a challenge to achievement.

It is thanking God for happiness by striving to make others happy.

It is thanking God for beauty by helping to make the world more beautiful.

It is thanking God for the inspiration by trying to be an inspiration to others.

It is thanking Go for health and strength by the care and reverence you show your body.

It is thanking God for the creative ideas that enrich life by adding your own creative contributions to human progress.

It is thanking God for each new day by living it to the fullest.

It is thanking God by giving hands, arms, legs, and voice to your thankful spirit.

It is adding to your prayers of thanksgiving, acts of thanksliving.

– Wilfred A. Peterson

THE SUREST WAY

If anyone would tell you the shortest, surest way to happiness and all perfection, he must tell you to make it a rule to yourself to thank and praise God for everything that happens to you. For it is certain that whatever seeming calamity happens to you, if you thank and praise God for it, you turn it into a blessing. – William Law

Shakespeare: “Beggar that I am, I even poor in thanks.

Rosetti: “Were there no God, we would be in this glorious would with grateful hearts: and no one to thank.

Skeath: “Let us thank God that He has made it possible for us to give something back to Him.

Handout #59: Deciding Right from Wrong; All That I Ask; Go to Church

DECIDING RIGHT FROM WRONG …

DOES THE COURSE OF ACTION YOU PLAN TO FOLLOW SEEM LOGICAL AND REASONABLE?  NEVER MIND WHAT ANYONE ELSE HAS TO SAY.  DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO YOU?  IF DOES, IT IS PROBABLY RIGHT.

DOES IT PASS THE TEST OF SPORTSMANSHIP?  IN OTHER WORDS, IF EVERYONE FOLLOWED THIS SAME COURSE OF ACTION, WOULD THE RESULTS BE BENEFICIAL FOR ALL?

WHERE WILL YOUR PLAN OF ACTION LEAD?  HOW WILL IT AFFECT OTHERS?  WHAT WILL IT DO TO YOU?

WILL YOU THINK WELL OF YOURSELF WHEN YOU LOOK BACK AT WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?

TRY TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM THE PROBLEM.  PRETEND, FOR ONE MOMENT, IT IS THE PROBLEM OF THE PERSON YOU MOST ADMIRE.  ASK YOURSELF HOW THAT PERSON WOULD HANDLE IT.

HOLD UP THE FINAL DECISION TO THE FLARING LIGHT OF PUBLICITY.  WOULD YOU WANT YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?  THE DECISIONS WE MAKE IN THE HOPE THAT NO ONE WILL FIND OUT ARE USUALLY WRONG.

Dr. Harry E. Fosdick

ALL THAT I ASK …

GIVE ME MEN WHO WILL RUN WITH ABANDON.

GIVE ME MEN WHO WILL TACKLE AND BLOCK.

GIVE ME MEN WHO ARE ROUGH, TOUGH, AND NASTY, AND GROWL LIKE A BEAR WHEN THEY WALK.

GIVE ME MEN WHO ARE CONSCIOUS OF SPIRIT.

GIVE ME MEN WHO WILL PLAY FOR THE LOVE OF THE TEAM, AN ALL FOR ONE ATTITUDE.

GIVE ME MEN WHO WILL FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL.

GIVE ME MEN WHO WILL FACE ANY TASK.

GIVE ME MEN WHO WHEN MOLDED TOGETHER, MAKE A TEAM, THAT’S ALL THAT I ASK.

GIVE ME THESE MEN, I WILL TAKE THEM, NIGHT AND DAY I WILL WORK WITH A GRIN. I’LL TEACH THEM THE TECHNIQUES OF FOOTBALL, AND I’LL GIVE YOU A TEAM THAT WILL W-I-N!!!

********************************************

GO TO CHURCH

Has God smiled upon you friend?  GO TO CHURCH!

Have you found the rainbow’s end?  GO TO CHURCH!

Talents rare you may possess all the things that means success … to insure your happiness,  GO TO CHURCH!

Is your back against the wall?  GO TO CHURCH!

Have you see the castle fall?  GO TO CHURCH!

Do you bear a secret sorrow?  Are you fearful of tomorrow?  God has strength that you may borrow … GO TO CHURCH!

He is always waiting there … GO TO CHURCH!

Be the weather bad or fair … GO TO CHURCH!

Synagogue or chapel small, Great Cathedral or a hall, HE’LL be glad to have you call … GO TO CHURCH!

Handout #58: Take Time . . .

Update:  We had the privilege of having my son Blake play his championship game at the Bron Bacevich Stadium this weekend; however, they lost 28-14.  The boys had a great season and it was so special to have the semi-final and championship games at Bron Bacevich Stadium!

TAKE TIME …

Take time to live – it is the one secret of success.

Take time to think – it is the source of power.

Take time to play – it is the secret of perpetual youth.

Take time to read – it is the foundation of knowledge and the fountain of wisdom.

Take time for friendship – it is the source of business, and the road to happiness.

Take time to laugh – it is the music of the soul, and it helps lift loads.

Take time to give – it is too short a day to be selfish.

Take time to work – it is the price of success.

Take time to dream – it hitches the soul to the stars.

Take time to help those less fortunateit is our common nature, and it is the key to Heaven.

TAKE TIME TO PRAYGOD WARMS HIS HANDS AT MAN’S HEART WHEN HE PRAYS. PRAYING IS THE GREATEST POWER ON EARTH.

Take time to love and be lovedit is a God-given privilege

TAKE TIME

PRAYER

A prayer in its simplest definition is merely a wish turned Godward.

Victor Hugo – There are times in a man’s life when, regardless of the attitude of the body, the soul is on its knees in prayer.

St. Chrysostom – He that enjoys aught without thanksgiving is as though he robbed God.

Prayer is the contemplation of the facts of life from the highest point of view.

St. Augustine – If you would never cease to pray, never cease to long for it. The continuance of your longing is the continuance of your prayer.

Prayer till prayer makes you forget your own wish, and leave it or merge it in God’s will.
