Handout #57: Life is Tremendous . . .

One quick note:  This weekend was very special for the Bacevich Family.  My son, Blake, plays football for the 6th grade St. Susanna team. On Saturday, his team played in the Greater Catholic Youth League semi-final game at the Bron Bacevich Stadium.  It was the first time since the stadium was renamed that a Bacevich played there.  Bron was looking down on them, blessed us with a beautiful day and a win for the St. Susanna Titans.  It was a day that will be remembered forever, and we get to go back to Bron Bacevich Stadium on Saturday for the Championship game!

LIFE IS TREMENDOUS

NO MAN can fight his way to the top and stay at the top without exercising the fullest measure of grit, courage, determination, and resolution.  Every man who gets anywhere does so because he has first firmly resolved to progress in the world and then has enough stick-to-it-tive ness to transform his resolution into reality.  Without resolution, no man can win any worthwhile place among his fellow men. – B.C. Forbes

  • WORK AS HARD AS YOU CAN, GET AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, GIVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.
  • NOTHING IN LIFE CAN COMPARE WITH THE THRILL OF KNOWING GOD AND KNOWING HE KNOWS YOU.
  • KNOW-HOW is tremendous when you know-why; know-how lets you drive it, knowing why drives you.
  • TRUTH and LOVE are two of the most powerful things in the world; and when they both go together they cannot easily be withstood. –Ralph Cudworth
  • LOVE does not make you weak, because it is the source of all strength, but it makes you see the nothingness of the illusory strength on which you depended before you knew it. – Leon Bloy
  • One’s life work, I have learned, grows with the working and living.  Do it as if your life depended on it, and the first thing you know you’ll have made a life out of it. A good life, too. – Theresa Helburn
  • My most cherished possession I wish I could leave you is my faith in Jesus Christ, for with him and nothing else, you can be happy, but without him and with all else you’ll never be happy. – Patrick Henry
  • We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success.  We often discover what will do by finding out what will not do, and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery. – Samuel Smiles
  • A cardinal rule to remember in reading inspirational books:  You only get to keep and enjoy what you share and give away.  If you aren’t going to read with the purpose of sharing and giving, I suggest you give the books to someone who will share with you and you’ll discover the power of books as you watch the reader grow through sharing with you.  Perhaps the best idea would be to use the “Brain trust” idea of “Think and Grow Rich” and both of you begin reading and sharing with each other.  – Charles E. Jones.
  • LIFE’S GREATEST CHALLENGE IS NOT BEING A MAN’S MAN BUT GOD’S MAN.
  • My best lessons in life are not those teaching me new things so much as those helping me unlearn some old things.
  • A MAN IS NEVER A FAILURE UNTIL HE BLAMES SOMEONE ELSE.
  • It’s not important that everyone is like you, but it’s very important that there is some one just like you.
  • Don’t spend your life trying to make right decisions; invest your life in making decision and making them right.
  • THE WORLD STANDS A SIDE TO LET ANYONE PASS WHO KNOWS WHERE HE IS GOING.
  • IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A TOEHOLD ON SUCCESS BY ACTING LIKE A HEAL.

Handout #56: Price of Success??

PRICE OF SUCCESS???

What is the price of success? It is simply …

To use all of your courage to force yourself to concentrate on the problem at hand, to think of it deeply and constantly, to study it from all angles, and to plan.

To have a high and sustained determination to put over what you plan to accomplish, no matter what circumstances may arise … and nothing worthwhile has ever been accomplished without some obstacles overcome.

To refuse to believe that there are any circumstances sufficiently strong to defeat you in the accomplishment of your purpose.

HARD!! I should say so! That’s why so many men never attempt to acquire success. They answer the siren call of the rut, and remain on the beaten paths for beaten men. Nothing worthwhile has ever been achieved without constant endeavor, some pain, and constant application of the lash of ambition. That’s the price of success.

I believe every man should ask himself: Am I willing to endure the pain of this struggle for the comforts and the rewards and the glory that go with achievement? Or shall I accept the uneasy and inadequate contentment that comes with mediocrity? Am I willing to pay the price of success?

  • You can’t keep trouble from coming, but you needn’t give it a chair to sit on.
  • Some people are so busy learning the tricks of the trade that they never learn the trade.
  • There are few, if any, jobs in which ability alone is sufficient – Needed also are Loyalty, Sincerity, Enthusiasm and Cooperation.
  • The only way to have a true friend is to be a true friend.
  • The biggest sin in life is wasting time.
  • Horse Sense is what stops a horse from betting on people.
  • Do unto others as if others were you.
  • When you think you’re at the end of your rope – tie a knot in it and hang on.
  • If you indulge in self-pity, the only sympathy you can effect is from the same source.
  • He who loses money losses much; he who loses friends, loses more; he who loses faith – loses all.
  • LIFE is not easy for any of us, but it is a continued challenge, and it is up to us to be cheerful and to be strong, so that those who depend on us may draw strength from our example.
  • Be slow in choosing a friend – slower in changing.

Handout #54: One Day at a Time; Real Value of Football

ONE DAY AT A TIME

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry.  Two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.  One of these days is yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its ashes and pains.  Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.  All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday.  We cannot undo a single act we performed.  We cannot erase a single word said.  Yesterday is gone!

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow, with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is beyond our immediate control.  Tomorrow’s sun will rise, whether in splendor or behind a mask of clouds.  But it will rise.  Until it does we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.

This leaves only one daytoday.  Any man can fight the battles of one day.  It is when you and I add the burdens of two awful enemies – yesterday and tomorrow, that we break down.

It is not necessarily the experience of today that disturbs one’s peace of mind.  It is often the bitterness for something which happened yesterday and the dread of what tomorrow may bring.  Let us therefore live one day at a time.

THE “MIND PLAYER” IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN THE” MUSCLE PLAYER”

****************************************

REAL VALUE OF FOOTBAL

The football field is one of the last sanctuaries of activity that is essentially and exclusively masculine.   The basic elements of hard contact and physical competition provide the cornerstone around which the game is constructed.  Left to themselves, the instinct for contact and competition would raise kmen scarcely above the level of the animal, but when their instincts are bounded by a strict code, a set of rules, we can see the human condition in microcosm.

Football then, provides a necessary outlet for the natural aggressiveness of men, while pointing to the equally natural need to rules, standards and ethical codes.

Mothers, try as you might, you will never fully understand the magnetic hold this game has over its’ participants. You can never experience the feeing a football player has as he stands exhausted on a muddy field, bleeding and battered (perhaps in defeat but never defeated), wishing there was still another quarter to play.  You will never know this feeling because this experience has been reserved for men – men who play football.

The Title of this Handout is “Teen Creed“. Yes, it is very useful for teenagers, but also is very useful for all of us in all stages of life.  Enjoy!

TEEN CREED

Don’t let your parents down; they brought you up.

Be humble enough to obey; you may give orders someday.

Choose companions with care; you become what they are.

Guard your thought; what you think, you are.

Choose only a date who would make a good mate.

Be master of your habits, or they will master you.

Don’t be a show-off; when you drive, drive with safety and arrive.

Don’t let the crowd pressure you; stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything.
