Handout #52: Success – Studies, Sports, Life; The Answer

SUCCESS – STUDIES – SPORTS – LIFE …

SUCCESS isn’t never making mistakes; It’s never giving up when I make mistakes.

SUCCESS isn’t always accomplishing everything I set out to do; It’s always setting out to do what I know I can accomplish.

SUCCESS isn’t always knowing how to say what I feel; It’s always knowing how to feel what I say.

SUCCESS isn’t being a perfect person; It’s being glad I am not perfect so I can understand others.

SUCCESS isn’t what people think I am; It’s what I am.

SUCCESS isn’t being the superstar who always gets the applause; It’s sitting back and letting someone else get the credit.

SUCCESS isn’t supporting myself with many superficial successes; It’s finding myself submerged in the process of God’s eternal success.

– Ken Harris, A Christian Athlete

THE ANSWER – BY GRANTLAND RICE

When the battle breaks against you and the crowd forgets to cheer

When the anvil chorus echoes with the essence of a jeer;

When the knockers start their panning in the knocker’s nimble way

With a rap for all your errors and a josh upon your play –

There is one quick answer ready that will nail them on the wing;

There is one reply forthcoming that will wipe away the sting;

There is one elastic come-back that will hold them as it should –

MAKE GOOD!

No matter where you finish in the mix-up or the row –

There are those among the rabble who will pan you anyhow;

But the entry who is sticking and delivering the stuff

Can listen to the yapping as he giggles up his cuff;

The loafer has no come-back and the quitter no reply

When the Anvil Chorus echoes, as it will against the sky;

But there is one quick and ready answer that will wrap them in a hood –

MAKE GOOD!

Teddy Roosevelt – I am only an average man, but I work harder at it than the average man.

Dwight D. Eisenhower – I believe when you are in any contest you should work like there is, to the very last minute, a chance to lose it.

Unknown – Success in neither fame, wealth nor power. Success is seeking, knowing and obeying God.

Definition – The simplest definition of success is this: “The progressive realization of worthwhile, predetermined, personal goals.”

Handout #51: Little Eyes Upon You

Happy Birthday to the Coach!  Today is Coach Bacevich’s birthday, September 19, 1906.  My son, Brady, shares Bron’s birthday and today is his birthday too!  Brady is 9 today.  Happy Birthday to Grapndpa and Brady!!  This is one of my favorite handouts because it reminds me so much of my thoughts when I was a kid about my Grandpa and Dad.  I read this Handout, Little Eyes Upon You, at my Grandfather’s funeral.

Little Eyes Upon You

There are little eyes upon you,

And they’re watching night and day;

There are little ears that quickly

Take in every word you say;

There are little hands all eager

To do anything you do;

And a little boy who’s dreaming

Of the day he’ll be like you.

You’re the little fellow’s idol;

You’re the wisest of the wise,

In his little mind about you,

No suspicions ever rise;

He believes in you devoutly

Holds that all you say and do,

He will say and do, in your way

When he’s grown-up like you.

There’s a wide-eyed little fellow,

Who believes you’re always right.

And his ears are always open,

And he watches day and night;

You are setting an example

Every day in all you do,

For the little boy who’s waiting

To grow up to be like you.

Handout # 50: 3D’s Keys to Success; What Have I Done Today; Courage

3D’S: KEYS TO SUCCESS IN SPORTS

DEDICATION – an enthusiastic willingness to accept, even look forward to, the long hours of practice, conditioning and preparation necessary for excellence in any type of endeavor.

DESIRE – Maintaining, within, a constant ever burning fire to excel.  With it you have the stamina, both mental and physical, to put in those long hours.

DESCIPLINE – Possessing the inner strength to commit yourself to the rules, regulations and training needed to achieve excellence and sticking to them.

To me, team success comes before personal glory.  And so it should be with you.  Thank God for your talents so that you will be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

Do these things … and you will not only be a better football player, but a well rounded person who is an asset to your tem, your community, your country.   Bart Starr

************************************

WHAT HAVE I DONE TODAY?

What have I done today to make a better world for someone’s sake?  What child is happier for a smile,  What woman found today in me a touch of knightly chivalry?

There are such chances all the way to serve … What Have I done today?

For, if I cannot think of one Good Deed my busy hands have done, Cannot recall a single word the hearts of sadness should have heard; if I have been so much concerned with my affairs I never turned, to answer someone’s sudden call … What matter if I lived at all?

Oh, I may dream of things to do when I have put my own dream through, but Heaven does not count so much the gifts of those who have too much.

But how GOD loves, for God is just, The beggar who divides a crust.  Tomorrow is too far away to count. WHAT HAVE I DONE TODAY?

************************************

COURAGE …

The world has no room for cowards.  We must all be ready somehow to toil, to suffer, to die.

And yours is not the less noble because no drum beats before you when you go out to your daily battlefields, and no crowds shout you coming when you return from your daily victory or defeat.   Robert Louis Stevenson

************************************

COURAGE is the price that life extracts for granting peace.

The SOUL that knows it not – knows no release from little things.   Amelia Earhart

REPUTATION AND ???

The circumstances amid which you live determine your reputation:

The truth you believe determines your character.

Reputation is what you are supposed to be:

Character is what you are.

Reputation is the photograph:

Character is the face.

Reputation comes over one from without:

Character grows up from within.

Reputation is what you have when you come to a new community:

Character is what you have when you go away.

Your reputation is learned in an hour:

Your character does not come to light for a year.

Reputation is made in a moment:

Charter is built in a lifetime.

Reputation grows like a mushroom:

Character grows like the oak.

A single newspaper report give you your reputation:

a life of toil gives you your character.

Reputation makes you rich or makes you poor:

Character makes you happy or makes you miserable.

Reputation is what men say about you on your tombstone:

Character is what angles say about you before the throne of god.

KING FOOTBALL …

Eleven warriors of the gridiron game bidding for the spotlight: for power and fame.  Ordeals now settled in king football’s court thrill the vast millions, this peer of all sport.  Blocking and tackling, the kick and the pass, win for each gridder the heart of a lass.  Each man is a cog in this human machine, striving to play a fair game and clean.

Autumn winds blow and we chill to the bone, but football has come for a brief three months loan.  Stadium rooters, both student and grad, smile when we win, when we lose become sad.

One adverse break and the cause may be lost, one little slip and the goal line is crossed.  One muffed punt and the game may be done, one complete pass and the game may be won!

All this makes football exciting to all, with thrills for the grown-up and thrills for the small. Yes, king football, we wish you would stay, but we know in late fall you’ll hasten away.   – Stan W. Carlson

******************************************

The reason so many people are unhappy today and seeking help to cope with life is that they fail to understand what human existence is all about. Until we recognize that life is not just something to be enjoyed, but rather is a task that each of us is assigned, we’ll never find meaning in our lives and never truly be happy.

– Dr. Victor Franki, Holocaust Survivor
