Handout #44: Tribute to Coaches, and more

TRIBUTE TO COACHES…

The Football Coach has a lonely job, he rarely gets much credit.  And if he hears a kindly word… This is the group that said it.

He labors hard to build the sport, in a manner almost stately.  But the only question he’s ever asked is: “What have you won for us lately?”

And so, you coaches, hear my wish:  And don’t sink into lethargy.  Have some fun – there are lots worse things…. Than being burned in effigy.

President Gerald Ford, 1975, American FBall Coaches Convention, his final tribute football coaches, following his being awarded the Tuss McLaughry Award, the Association’s highest honor.

*********************************

ON GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYERS . . .  Football players practice, drill, and scrimmage in hot weather, cold weather, dust and rain.  They get knocked down often, they sometimes get hurt, they sometimes get yelled at, and sometimes they lose.  But the good ones, never quit; even when the cause seems hopeless, they go on wet, dirty, kicked around, weary, bleeding, hurting, but they go on.

WILL TO WIN … You take the best team and the worst team and line them up and you would find very little physical difference.  You would find an emotional difference.  The winning team has a dedication, a total commitment … They will not accept defeat. – Roger Staubach.

*********************************

BLESS THE FOOTBALL COACH

A man knocked at the Heavenly Gate,

His face was scarred and old,

He stood before the Man of Fate,

For admission to the fold.

“What have you done,” St. Peter asked,

To gain admission here?”

“I’ve been a Youth Football Coach, Sir” he said,

For many and many a year.”

The Pearly Gates swung open wide!

St. Peter touched the bell.

“Come in, Come in and choose your harp,” he said,

“You’ve had your share of hell.”

*********************************

FOOTBALL AND FITNESS

The sports fulfill their mission to the ultimate degree

When fun and tip-top fitness meet in perfect harmony.

The core of pure contentment is to youth, as I recall,

The times they storm the field and choose sides to play football.

Its enchantment ever lingers through a player’s later years

To light the dark which closes down with loss and toil and tears.

Age and death we flaunt your edicts!

Youth will curb your gloomy pall!

For in dreams we’re back in childhood, choosin’ up to play football.

– Excerpts From Athletic Anthology

MIRACLEDo not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men.  Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks.  The doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be a miracle.  Every day you shall wonder at yourself, at the richness of life which has come to you by the Grace of God.   – Treasure Chest

Handout #42: Teamwork

TEAMWORK

  • Teamwork is the sure short cut to a good season in sports – the difference between an in-betweener and a real champion.
  • It teaches youngsters to sacrifice personal feelings in the interest of a group – his teammates.  It’s a quality not for showoffs or swell-heads.
  • It makes for showmanship in a team – something fans enjoy watching; something they’ll back and support.
  • It upsets the best laid plans of opponents.  They can stop an individual star, but can’t uncover a scheme to stop a group of players working as a team.
  • An ant by itself seems an insignificant insect but as a horde it terrifies even a giant elephant.  So does a well-balanced team working in unison.
  • The fellow sitting out a game on the substitute’s bench is as important in a good team as one in action on the field of play.  For it is his rooting, his enthusiasm that makes the field men fight all the harder.
  • When facing adversity or defeat there is nothing more assuring than fellows pulling together in a common cause.  It may not always win ball games – but it does make for lifelong friendships and memories.
  • Teamwork requires self-control and self-discipline – elements good athletes must possess to make for a winning team and season.
  • Although teamwork accomplishes victories, it is essential to ward off bitterness of defeat – by group determination to practice plays and acts of conditioning that much harder to assure future wins.
  • Teamwork between coach and players – between children and parents – between students and teacher depend on respect for one another, a common goal, ability to make sacrifices and above all – LOYALTY.

TEAMWORK – “Work done by a number of associates, all subordinating personal prominence to the efficiency of the whole.” – Webster’s Dictionary

***********************************

  • It is so easy for all of us to more or less justify our own inefficiencies by criticizing others.
  • Persistent people (athletes) begin and succeed where others fail.
  • Doing a thing nearly right and doing it exactly right is usually the difference between success and failure.
  • If it is worth doing at all, it is worth doing well.

Handout #41: “The “Coach”

THECOACH

He is called “coach.”  It is a difficult job, and there is no clear way to succeed in it.  One cannot copy another who is a winner, for there seems to be some subtle, secret chemistry of personality that enables a person to lead successfully, and no one really knows what it is.  Those who have succeeded and those who have failed represent all kinds–young and old, inexperienced and experienced, hard and soft, tough and gentle, good-natured and foul-tempered, proud and profane, articulate and inarticulate, even dedicated and casual.  Most are dedicated, some more than others, but dedication alone is not enough.  Some are smarter than others, but intelligence is not enough.  All want to win, but some want to win more than others, and just wanting to win is not enough in any event.  Even winning is often not enough.  Losers almost always get fired, but winners get fired, too.

They plot victories, suffer defeats, and endure criticism.  They neglect their families, travel endlessly, and live alone in a spotlight surrounded by others.  Why do they put up with it?  Having seen them hailed as geniuses at party-like press conferences and having seen them fired with pat phrases such as “fool”, I have wondered about them.  Having seen them exultant in victory and depressed by defeat, I have sympathized with them. Having seen some broken by the job and others die from it, one is moved to admire them and to hope that someday the world will learn to understand them.

THOUGHTS

  • Did you ever stop to think when you’re feeling kind of blue, that the boy who sits beside you may have troubles worse than you?
  • Just try a friendly gesture-stick out a helping hand. You may help to build a castle, where before stood ebbing sand.
  • As you cheer your saddened neighbor, so your troubles lighter seem – You have driven out the darkness with friendship’s golden beam.
  • A friendly word costs nothing, yet has power hundred fold; And worth more to be a brother, than pocket full of gold.
  • Remember this when driving with care and courtesy – Lives saved by pleasant actions – May be his or even thee.

WE CAN DO ANYTHING WE WANT TO DO IF WE STICK TO IT LONG ENOUGH.– Helen Keller

*******************************

PRAYER Son of Man, whenever I doubt of life, I think of thee.  Nothing is so impossible as that thou shouldst be dead.  I can imagine the hills to dissolve in vapour, and the stars to melt in smoke, and the rivers to empty themselves in sheer exhausting, but I feel no limit in Thee.  Thou never growest old to me.  Last century is old, last year is old, last season is an obsolete fashion – but thou are not obsolete.  Thou are abreast of all the centuries – nay – thou goest before them like a star.  I never come up with thee, modern as I am.

Handout #40: Stick it Out . . .

STICK IT OUT …

When your world’s about to fall, And your back’s against the wall, When you’re facing wild retreat and utter rout; When it seems that naught can stop it, All your pleas and plans can’t prop it Get a grip upon yourself and – stick it out!

Any craven fool can quit, But a man with pluck and grit, Will hold until the very final shout; In the snarling teeth of sorrow He will laugh and say “Tomorrow The luck will change – I guess I’ll stick it out.”

The luck does change; you know it; All the records prove and show it, And the men who win are men who strangle doubt, Who hesitate nor swerve, Who have grit and guts and nerve, And whose motto is:  Play hard, and stick it out.

And you think you can’t last long, So you, when things go wrong, That you’ve got to quit nor wait for the final bout; Smile, smile at your beholders, Clench your teeth and square your shoulders and fight! You’ll win if you but STICK IT OUT!!

When your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on guard, Fight One More Round.

When your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish your opponent would crack you one on the jaw and put you to sleep, Fight One More Round.

Remembering that the man who always fights one more round is never whipped.
