Handout #39: Living at its Best

LIVING AT IT’S BEST…

  • So long as enthusiasm lasts, so long is youth still with us. – David Starr Jordan
  • No one can be wrong with man and right with God. – Harry Emerson Fosdick
  • Youth is the time for the adventure of the body, but age for the triumphs of the mind. – Logan Pearsall Smith
  • “Beauty is truth, truth Beauty,” – That is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. – John Keats
  • The farther a man knows himself to be from perfection, the nearer he is to it. – Gerard Groute
  • Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see yourself. – George Bernard Shaw
  • Few delights can equal the mere presence of one whom we trust utterly. – George MacDonald
  • Silences make the real conversations between friends.  Not the saying but the never needing to say is what counts. – Margaret Lee Runbeck

*****************************

WHICH ARE YOU?

A little more kindness; A little less speed.

A little more giving; A little less greed.

A little more smile; A little less frown.

A little less kicking; A man while he’s down.

A little more “We;” A little less “I.”

A little more laugh; A little less cry.

A little more flowers on the pathway of life,

And fewer on graves at the end of the strife.

*****************************

GOODNESS …

  • Be not simply good; be good for something.
  • Good actions are the invisible hinges on the doors of Heaven.
  • Conviction is worthless unless it is converted into conduct.
  • GOD has put something noble and good into every heart which he has created.
  • A Saint is one who makes goodness attractive.

Handout #38: Rules for a Perfect Day

RULES FOR A PERFECT DAY

  • JUST FOR TODAY I will try to strengthen my mind by reading something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
  • JUST FOR TODAY I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out.
  • JUST FOR TODAY I will do a task that needs to be done but which I have been putting off.  I will do it as an exercise in will-power.
  • JUST FOR TODAY I will dress as becomingly as possible, talk low, act courteously, be liberal with praise and criticize not one bit nor find fault with anything.
  • JUST FOR TODAY I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax.  In this half hour sometime I will think of GOD so as to get a little more perspective in my life.
  • JUST FOR TODAY I will be unafraid.  Especially, I will not be afraid to be happy, to enjoy what is beautiful, to love and to believe that those I love, love me.

– Author Unknown

**********************************

I RESOLVE

  • TO strive to contribute something to the world, its work and the people in it.
  • TO spend and be spent in worthy service.
  • TO adhere, the best I can, to the Golden Rule.
  • TO philosophize more, recalling always, when things go awry, “This, too, will pass.”
  • TO try always to see viewpoints other than my own.
  • TO make humility and simplicity so much a part of myself that I shall become as a child, as one of those of whom the Master declared, “For of such is the kingdom of Heaven.”

– B. C. FORBES

One of the illusions is that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour.  Write it in your heart that every day is the best day of the year. — RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Handout #37: You Must Decide

YOU MUST DECIDE

You are the fellow that has to decide whether you will do it or toss it a side. You are the fellow who makes up your mind – whether you’ll lead or linger behind – whether you’ll try for the goal that’s afar or be content to stay where you are.

Take it or leave itHere’s something to do – just think it over. IT’S all up to you! What do you wish? To be known as a good man who’s willing to work, scorned for a loaner or praised by your chief, rich man or poor man or beggar or thief?  Eager or earnest or dull through the day, honest or crooked? It’s you who must decide in the in the face of the test whether you’ll shirk it or give it your best.

The best eraser in the world is a good night’s sleep.

*********************************

PROMISE YOURSELF

TO BE SO STRONG THAT NOTHING CAN DISTURB YOUR PEACE OF MIND.

TO TALK HEALTH, HAPPINESS AND PROSPERITY TO EVERY PERSON YOU MEET.

TO MAKE ALL YOUR FRIENDS FEEL THAT THERE IS SOMETHING IN THEM.

TO LOOK AT THE SUNNY SIDE OF EVERYTHING AND MAKE YOUR OPTIMISM COME TRUE.

TO THINK ONLY OF THE BEST, TO WORK ONLY FOR THE BEST AND TO EXPECT ONLY THE BEST.

TO BE JUST AS ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS AS YOU ARE ABOUT YOUR OWN.

TO FORGET THE MISTAKES OF THE PAST AND PRESS ON TO THE GREATER ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE FUTURE.

TO WEAR A CHEERFUL COUNTENANCE AT ALL TIMES AND GIVE EVERY LIVING CREATURE YOU MEET A SMILE.

TO GIVE SO MUCH TIME TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF YOURSELF THAT YOU HAVE NO TIME TO CRITICIZE OTHERS.

TO BE TOO LARGE FOR WORRY, TOO NOBLE FOR ANGER, TOO STRONG FOR FEAR, AND TOO HAPPY TO PERMIT THE PRESENCE OF TROUBLE.

– Christian D. Larson

*********************************

THOSE WHO FALL

All honor to him who shall win the prize, the world has cried for a thousand years, But to him who tries and who fails and dies, I give great honor and glory and tears.

O great is the hero who wins a name But greater many and many a time, Some pale-faced fellow who dies in shame And lets God finish the thought sublime.

O great is the man with a sword undrawn and good is the man who refrains from wine, But the man who fails and yet fights on, Lo, he is the twin-brother of mine.

*********************************

Men do not fail, they just give up easy.

VINCE LOMBARDI

Football requires a certain amount of Spartanism.  It requires a great sacrifice and self-denial and you must have control of yourself.

Football is like life- it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.

*********************************

The time to make friends is BEFORE you NEED THEM.

Handout #36: Player’s Code . . .

PLAYER’S CODE …

  • Play the game for the game’s sake.
  • Be generous when you win,  Be graceful when you lose.
  • Be fair always no matter what the cost.
  • Obey the laws of the game.  Work for the good of your team.
  • Accept the decisions of the officials with good grace.
  • Believe in the honesty of your opponents.  Conduct yourself with honor and dignity.

Honestly and wholeheartedly applaud the efforts of your teammates and your opponents.  The game that the State Athletic Associations (your league or conference) will support must provide opportunities for:

  • Fun, enjoyment and many other recreational satisfactions.
  • Achievement, recognition and the pursuit of excellence relative to the skill potential, personal competitive goals and physio/psycho needs of the participants.
  • The development of physical, mental, social and emotional fitness.

The type of game that the State Athletic Association (you league or conference) will not support nor tolerate is:

  • That which brings the game in disrepute.
  • That which results in physical or mental violence.
  • That which is morally indefensible.

***********************************

YOUR SUCCESS depends upon youYou have to steer your own course – You have to do your own thing.  You must make your own decisions.  You have to solve your own problems.  Your character is your handiwork.  You have to write your own record.  You have to build your own monumentor dig your own pit.   Which Are You Doing?

***********************************

There is no thrill in easy sailing when the skies are clear and blue.  There is no joy in merely doing things which anyone can do.  But there is some satisfaction that is mighty sweet to take, when you reach a destination that you thought you couldn’t make– Unknown
