Handout #26: Will to Prepare

“WILL TO PREPARE”…

Charles B. (Bud) Wilkinson, the fabulously successful former football coach at the University of Oklahoma in his acceptance of the prestigious Amos Alonzo Stagg Award for his long and distinguished service to football at the American Football Coaches Association 1984 Annual Meeting.

“Conference champions, honored guests, and fellow coaches – and I say that with pride – I’m just really overwhelmed by the honor you’ve paid me and I certainly want to thank Dave (Dave Mauerer, President of the AFCA) for his most gracious introduction.

“Football has really been my life.  And even though I haven’t coached for many years I’ve been very fortunate to stay a part of the game through my involvement with television.  I’ve had the opportunity to meet and know many young coaches as well as renewing friendships with the men I worked with and competed with during the time I was a coach.  “I’d like to have some sort of eloquence to properly convey to you how deeply appreciative I am of the honor you have paid me.  I would like to say ‘thank you’ and I would like to share one thought with you that has had increasing meaning for me over the years.

“When I was an athlete and when I was coaching we talked a great deal about the will to win – and it’s obviously a very basic thing.  But as time has passed I’ve had a recognition of a much more important quality and that is called ‘the will to prepare,’  It’s not too hard to get the effort when the people are in the stands, the bands are playing, the cheers are there.  But at 6:30 in the morning on the fifth day of double practice you now test the individual and his desire to excel and become as capable as he can in his sport.  The same thing is true in business.  It’s true in politics.  If you have the will to prepare, it will take care of itself

“Again, I’d like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ll never appreciate anything so much.”

*********************************

SUCCESS… The successful man makes just as many mistakes as anyone else. The crucial difference lies in the fact that he learns from each mistake; that’s how he became successful.

QUALITY… Quality is never an accident.  It is always the result of intelligent effort.  There must be W – I – L – L to produce a superior product, player or team.

FEAR … Fear is a habit, so is self-pity, defeat, anxiety, despair, hopelessness and resignation.  You can eliminate all of these negative habits with two simple resolves: “I can!” and “I will!”

COURAGE … The will to do, the tenacity to overcome all obstacles and finish the course, is rooted in courage. It is the outward manifestation of our spiritual development.

SPORTS TALK

  • ATTITUDES – Every change in human attitude must come through internal understanding and acceptance.  Man is the only known creature who can re-shape and re-mold himself by altering his attitude.
  • GOOD TRAINING HABITS are dependent on a young man’s character and environment.  Good Training Habits off the field depend on personal honor, desire and willingness to sacrifice.
  • A CHAMPION athlete obeys all the rules and plays the game: Fair and  Square.
  • When a man is wrapped up in himself … the package is usually pretty small.
  • Life is like a ball. You must learn to control the up and down bounces.
  • You are what you think about all day long.
  • The skill of losing with poise and grace may show more maturity than the skill of winning the game.
  • SPORTSMANSHIP is a by-product of a SPIRIT of TOLERANCE and GOODWILL, and the centering of attention on the Good Qualities of Teammates and Friendly Opponents!
  • SATISFACTION in a competitive sport is the thrill of doing something better than one knows how to do it.
  • Being just a little careless about an injury is like being just a little dead.
  • Every man has a chance to be come greater than he is.
  • What the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.
  • Reaching high keeps a man on his toes.

****************************

LUCK – Is what I call the sum total of ignorance. The more we know, the less bad luck we have. The harder you work, the luckier yet get.  Courage and Hard Work – are the integral parts of success – there is no success without Extra Effort.

YOUR WORTH?  A man may be worth $20 a day from his neck down, but from his neck up … well – that is up to him.

****************************

MAY YOU HAVE

“May you have enough happiness to keep you sweet; enough trials to keep you strong; enough sorrow to keep you human; enough hope to keep you happy; enough failure to keep you humble; enough success to keep you eager; enough friends to give you comfort; enough faith and courage in yourself, your work, and your country to banish depression; enough wealth to meet your needs; enough determination to make each day a better day than yesterday.”

Handout #24: Courage to Conquer

COURAGE TO CONQUER

Pick a goal in life, Pick something worth going after, worth striving for.  If it’s to be an All American, try to be the very best.

Shoot for the moon, that’s the thing.  Go for the very highest.  And while you’rs shooting for the moon, and while you’re going for this goal, remember you have to pay the price.

The price might be constant devotion, constant heartache, constant practice, and loyalty to your coaches.

Give everything you have – your body, your mind and your soul; give all you have.  You can always depend on HIM.

You will discover that HE will give you the courage – regardless of the problem.

******************************

FOR YOUR PERSONAL MOTIVATION

  • Have Patience. All things are difficult before they become easy.
  • An error doesn’t become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.
  • The person who wants to do something finds a way; the other kind finds an excuse.
  • Ideas are funny things; they won’t work unless you do.
  • We will know as much of GOD as we are willing to put into practice, and no more.
  • One cannot always be a hero, but one can be a man.
  • Pick your friends, but not to pieces.

******************************

 KEEP YOUR PATIENCE

(FOR IF YOU LOSE IT YOU LOSE YOUR: COMPOSURE – CONFIDENCE – ASSURANCE – WILL – AND – SUCCESS. )

PATIENCE IS VICTORIOUSOftentimes it outruns skill and outwits impulsiveness.

PATIENCE IS PRODUCTIVE. In time the mulberry leaf becomes silk.

PATIENCE IS VISIONARYVisualize the ripened grain as the fruition of a series of successive steps of working and waiting — Securing the land, breaking the soil and planting the seed.   Nature is wise enough to wait and persistent enough to eventually have her way: and so can man, if he will add Patience to Diligence.

PATIENCE IS A POSSESSOR:

  • The world belongs to him who bides his time.  (Leroy Brownlow).
  •  A Good Leader takes a little more than his share of the blame – a little less than his share of credit.
  • “It isn’t the thing we do or say, but all in the way we do or say it.   What would the egg amount to, pray, if the hen got up on the perch to lay it?”

Handout #23: Opportunity

OPPORTUNITYISNOWHERE

.

How did you read the above?

“Opportunity is No Where”

— or —

“Opportunity is Now Here”

.

You see, a lot in life depends on how YOU SEE situations and opportunities.  Just as you could have read the above in two different ways, you can also look at life’s opportunities in two ways.

.

The Negative way — “I can’t,” “it won’t,” “I know, but,” etc.

The Positive way — “I will,” “I can,” etc.

.

The winners in life are always looking at the positive aspects of situations.  If a situation isn’t satisfying your needs, chances are it isn’t helping others either.  So — put your creative self to work and make it better.  Then as you continue to do this, you not only help your situation but others as well.

.

So don’t complain — take another look and keep in mind . . .

OPPORTUNITY IS NOW HERE!!
