Handout #18: Learning to Live

LEARNING TO LIVE…

IT IS A FACT!

***  Every one likes to be on toplikes to be successful – likes to win.  But only a few want to be on top – to be successful – to win.  These people have but one question – “What do I have to do to win?

***  In every competitive situation, you have a winner and a loser.  Yet you know, it is not always the smartest, fastest, or the strongest that wins.  It’s the fellow who believes he can, and eagerly, willingly and with tremendous dedication, pays the price in effort.

***  One can only do his maximum, level best.  However, what is his very best, only he knows.  This is an intangible thing.  It is in his mind and is expressed by his “heart.”

***  You have won, you are on top, you are successful, when you have put forth your maximum, very best effort, in your preparation for and your participation in the activity – even when the “score” is against you.

***  It is easy to deceive others, but you know, at all times, about the intangibles: CourageDeterminationDedicationAll-out, Supreme effort.

***  We all need help along the way.  Sometimes praise is what we need; sometimes understanding; sometimes constructive criticism.  When and how much is not the easiest thing in the world.

***  In any group activity, leadership is essential.  Leadership cannot succeed if it is a “one-person” thing.  Leadership is one person influencing at least one other person in a positive way, for a positive, worthwhile goal or achievement.

***  Real leadership is influencing at least one other person in becoming a better person, or in making some activity or event a better thing.

***  “Impossible” things can be accomplished successfully.  This has been proved from the beginning of time.

IT’S BEEN SAID ….  There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want; and, after that, to enjoy it, Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second.

A SPARTAN PRAYER ….  May God give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change – The courage to change the things I can – And the wisdom to know the difference.

MAGIC OF MOTIVATION

What is the magic word of the “Blue – Chipper”?  What is the greatest word in educationWhat is the greatest word in football?  What is the greatest word in the American way of life?  It is a long word, a ten letter word, but it is not difficult to spell.  You spell it: M-O-T-I-V-A-T-I-O-NYou pronounce it mo’ti-va ‘tion. You define it as the stuff that permeates every part of your person, when you have in your mind a clear, vivid picture of the thing you’re seeking, your goal, the thing you are fighting for.  And you have in your heart an intense, burning desire to fight, to achieve, to succeed.  That’s motivationThat’s the magic word of the winner, the formula that refuses to fallMotivation is desire.

That’s what makes some youth go out in the hot sun until he gets blisters on his feet and his guts ache.  Makes some life weights until it hurts.  The motivated person will do everything possible to make himself a better person, a better football athlete.  The motivated athlete will make all necessary sacrifices (he will abide by common sense training rules, he will be physically fit at all times) and will put forth all the extra effort it takes to become and remain a winner.

Thought to Today – We’re never so good or so bad as we imagine.

Thought for Today – Success comes from hanging on after all others have let go.

Exercise – The only exercise some people get is jumping at conclusions.

Thought for Today – Heaven is the soul finding its own perfect personality in God.

FAITH is not belief without proof, but trust without reservation.

FRIENDSHIP – I didn’t find my friends: the Good God gave them to me.

THREE SIMPLE LITTLE RULES FOR SUCCESS

I don’t think much of the man who oversimplifies life, who reduces it to pat little formulas, who thinks in terms of slogans. I distrust this fellow because he promises too much for too little. His way, which seems so easy, is in many cases so very, very difficult that it is impossible – literally impossible to follow.

But at the same time we must take this business of success and get it down to some sort of organized basis. We are not pioneers. Thousands have gone before, blazing the trail, finding the landmarks. There are limits and boundaries and highways and rules and channels. For example:

A manager in Chicago has the deserved reputation of having built more million-dollar producers than any other manager who now or at any time in the past has been in the business. This man not only built million-dollar producers but multimillion-dollar producers. Consistent year-after-year production.

You might expect fireworks, mystery, Aladdin’s Lamp, circles on the sand, a lot of “this” and “that” in his work with his agents.

How very wrong you would be!  For repeatedly he has told me he gives his men only three rules:

(1)   Study one hour a day – preferably following an organized course of study;

(2)   Before you go to bed at night, know exactly whom you are going to see the next day (exactly what you will be doing the next day);

(3)   Always bounce backno matter what happens, bounce back with a smile and back to the job.

That’s all! How very simple! Yet I am satisfied that if you will follow these three rules, obey them to the letter, never deviating, never letting down, that this year will be the greatest year you have ever had.

Honest effort is never lost.  It must be soFor life never cheats!

CONDUCTThere is but one rule of conductAlways do the right thing.  The cost may be high in money, in friends, in sacrifice.  The cost to do wrong, is infinitely higher.  For a temporal gain we barter the infinities.

RESOLUTIONS …

No one will get out of this world alive.  So, resolve therefore in the year to maintain a sense of values.

Take care of yourself.  Good health is everyone’s major source of wealth.  Without it, happiness is almost impossible.  Resolve to be cheerful and helpful.  Avoid angry, abrasive persons.  They are generally vengeful.  Avoid zealots.  They are humor less.  Resolve to listen more and talk less.  No one every learns anything by talking.  Be leery of giving advice.  Wise men don’t need it, and fools won’t heed it.

Resolve to be tender to the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the wrong.

Sometimes in life you will have been all of these.  Do not equate money with success.  There are many successful money-makers who are miserable failures as human beings.  What counts most about success is how a man achieves.

Resolve to love, next year, someone you didn’t love this year.  Love is the most enriching ingredient of life.

LEADERSHIP … Leaders have two important characteristics:  first they are going somewhere;  second they are able to persuade other people to do with them.

LIFE … Three of the most difficult things in life are to keep a secret, forget and injury, and make good use of leisure time.

If there’s on thing we should let others find out for themselves, it’s how great we are.

DREAMS … Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.  Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go,  life is a barren field frozen with snow.  Langston Hughes

FAITH …  We shall be made truly wise if we be made content; content, too, not only with what we can understand, but content with what we do not understand – the habit of mind which theologians call, and rightly, faith in God.  Charles Kingsley

WISDOM …  The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them; that’s the essence of inhumanity.   George Bernard Shaw

LIFE …  Every man’s life is a plan of God.  Brother Juniper

WHAT DO YOU TELL YOURSELF(MOTIVATION)

The first fleeting instant during which an idea is conceived is a moment of decision!   What do you tell yourself?

Do you grasp the idea with a tingle of excitement, saying, “I can make it work!” …  or do you smother it by saying, “That’s impractical … too difficult … I don’t think it can be done?”  In that moment, you choose between success and failure.

You help to form a habit of either positive or negative thinking by what you tell yourself!  So give yourself a break … give your “better” self a chance to be creative!  Form the habit of Positive Reaction followed by Positive Action!

YOUR SUCCESS OR FAILURE DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU TELL YOURSELF!

WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT HIM, HE’LL LISTEN

The officials of a railroad, disturbed because commuters neglected to close doors in winter weather, put up signs that read: “For the comfort of other passengers, please close the doors.”  The door stayed open.  The posters were changed to read: “For your own comfort, please close the doors.”  The doors were closed.

When you wish to persuade someone, remember to talk about his situation, his needs, and specifically how your idea will help him.

When you have established the fact that you are there to help him, you obtain his attention, his interest, and you’ll be well on the way to making your point.

ARE YOU BANGING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE CLASS?

In driving to Columbus, Ohio, the other day I noticed a fly that kept banging his head against the inside of our windshield.  He did this for the entire on hundred-mile trip.  He wanted to get out.

During most of the trip the windows were opened and he could have flown out anytime, but he didn’t have a plan.  He just kept banging his head against the glass.

If he had stopped, looked around, taken stock of the situation and made a plan, he would have been out and free, but ended up hundred miles from where he started, way off the track.

Isn’t that the same way with many people?  They know what they want, but they never organize themselves and make a day-to-day plan.  Are you content to bang your head against the glass or do you have a plan?

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SET YOUR HEART ON!

Luther Burbank fell in love with Plants.  Edison fell in love with InventionFord fell in love with Motor Cars.  The Wright Brothers fell in love with Airplanes.  Be very careful what YOU set your heart on, for it will surely come true!
